6 inches is about right if you promise to never turn sharply while crossing over any rough ground. Really bad is crossing a dip at an angle while turning, such as entering a McDonalds or convenience store that has a dip at the entrance. Or backing at a near-jacknife over very rough ground with a dip included. So don't do that.
Mine is only 5", but I have two banged-up tops of the bed where the 5er overhang crunched the bed when crossing a dip at an angle. The 5er was tougher than the bed, so the dings are on the top of the bed and not on the trailer overhang.
If you plan to tow over rough ground, or need to turn across a dip, then 8" is a lot better. And "off roaders" sometimes need 10" or more clearance to prevent trailer to bed contact when turning or jacknifing over rough ground.
