I have a 99 Powerstroke and I am hooking up my brake controller and I know I have to put in two fuses but someone said I have to put a relay in can you tell me if this is true or not?

Pop the hood and look at the small relay box attached to the fuse block. Pop the cover and see if there are any relays in there. I don't know if there are suppose to be 1 or 2 relays & I am to lazy to go upstairs and look.

Has it never had a brake controler in it? When I put mine in my 2K F250 all I had to do was buy the ford adapter for the controler and then plug it in under the dash. I never had to put fuses or anything in...but maybe the guy before me did that. IDK

It has never had a controller in it. I looked under the hood the two boxes beside my fuse panel one of them has two relays in it and the other has none. In my fuse box the numbers only go up to 37, 38 is trailer towing back up lamp and 39 is trailer tow battery charge. I don't see where either of these would stop the controller from working properly. Any ideas? The two relays that are in one of the two boxes I assume is the electronic shift on the fly.

In o1 that stuff was not installed at the factory. My tow package came with a connector, for the controller, A relay and a couple fuses, in a plastic bag in the glove box.
Check the manual and see if the towing relkated hardware is in the fuse box.

Its been awhile since I put them in but I'm pretty sure it was two relays in the empty box. A 30 amp fuse at #28 and #16 and a 15 amp fuse at #8, 7.5 amps at #1 and #3 and 20 amp at #4, according to the manual. #28 is for the brake controller.

I guess I just don't have a clue. I am trying to hook up my brake controller and coming out the back of my controller is a red, black, white, & blue wires. Under my dash is the matching color wires hanging loose when I match these up I don't get a light on my controller. My quick plug has a 12ga red blue and white wire with a 14ga green and brown wire. I already installed my fuses does anyone know the configuration off the top of their head? What has me confused with the quick plug is there isn't a black to match with the black on the controller.

You probably have the wrong wires under the dash. There are usually 4 wires for stuff you want to add. One should be a constant hot, they all should go to a place under the hood on the drivers side( I think they are called upfitter wires). You still need to find the trailer brake wiring. In mine if you take the driver side knee panel off get on your back, look up and to your left sorta behind the radio strapped to a cross member hard to see and even harder to get to, it should be in that general area!!! Ya it is that hard to find. Expect to get your hands scrapped up trying to plug your harness in.
Then again maybe the 99's didn't come equipt like later years??
I did find where to plug it in but do you know how the wires connect? I have four coming out of the controller and five coming out of my truck harness.

I just installed a Tekonsha Prodigy in my 97 Powerstroke. I had the factory plug pigtail in the cab and the wires do not necessarlily match up color for color with the Prodigy or other any controller. I had the instructions from the Prodigy luckily.
The larger wires will be the power wires of some sort FYI.
I believe the brown wire from my truck serves no purpose with my Prodigy so you may have an extra.
I just recently installed my Prodigy also using the custom wire harness that came with it. It seems to me the extra wire was labeled in a way that led me to think it might be for back lighting of controller readout if needed.

that is correct. ford puts in a light switch for lighting the controller. so if you have gauges you can use this wire for them if not dont worry about the little wire.

Dont forget you wont get a reading with most controllers untill you hook up a trailer.
Ok I figured it out, I searched yahoo and found a old post in this forum from 04 and they had a link to a cross reference for the wiring. Yes the brown wire is an extra. I am going to be pulling a 40' gooseneck is there any reason I need the two relays? One of them is for the trailer tow battery charge, the other is for trailer tow backup lamps. I have a manual jack not electric so I don't know why I would need them.

40' trailer needs brakes, so you need a hot wire for that, and you need to charge the battery on the trailer. This battery is to activate the trailer brake away switch is case of a break away.
