Brake Question

I purchased a six pin adapter for the factory 7 pin plug on the Excursion. When I plug the trailer in (2 horse bumper pull) the brakes lock up (trailer). I do not have a brake controller in the truck. Is this normal behavior (since I don't have a controller) or do I need to look for a wiring problem. I used a flat-four adapter and obviously the brakes unlocked. I borrowed the trailer for the weekend horse show, but want to understand what's going on. Thanks in advance.

I had that problem on a customers trailer a couple years ago. Never figured it out, and had to haul boat and trailer to Key West from NH.

Ended up going without the brakes!

How do you expect to control the brakes on the trailer without a brake controler in the truck?

Found the 'problem'. Apparently (according to Trailer Wiring Diagram For 4 way, 6 way and 7 way circuits ) the 12V hot and Brake lines can be reversed. So there is no single standard for the pin-outs on a six pin (well - close). Turns out the adapter I have has a quick change pinning for those two pins as well - not quite plug and play. Issue understood and fixed. Thanks guys.

there is a standard way to wire all the different pin connectors--but not everyone follows it--i had the same problem when i worked at the garage--people switching trailers with other farmers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! got most of them wired correctly before i left that d$%^ place!!!!!!

No kidding on that one! 4 of us in my neighborhood borrow/trailers on a regular basis. One of us had a different wiring pattern. Finally stayed organized enough at my place tht we "borrowed" all 3 of his trailers and pickups over a short period and wiried them to match the rest of the neighborhood. The wife would get unsettled if she had to turn on the headlights and the trailer brakes set!!
