Cannot find a wiring adapter

Here's my issue; I have a 7 pin, flat RV style plug on my truck at the rear bumper. It plugs into my factory harness. I want to add a 6 pin gooseneck plug in my bed, but I dont want to cut and splice wires or get rid of my 7 pin plug.

I've checked about every parts store in town, only to be told that nobody makes a 'T' style plug that will allow my factory wiring harness to go to both the 6 and 7 pin plugs at the same time. They make one that will go to a 7 pin and a 4 pin, but not a six.

Surely someone has dealt with this before. Is cutting and splicing my only option?

Thanks!

Re: Cannot find a wiring adapter

Can you put a 7-pin round in the bed and pick up an adapter? I know its sort of a kluge, but it should work....

Re: Cannot find a wiring adapter

Without splices, I have two 7 pin plugs one in the bed, and one on the bumper.... so there must be a harness for it. (You could rewire the 7 pin on top to a 6 pin like you wanted)

Re: Cannot find a wiring adapter

I've searched and searched online and cant find one- I guess I'm just going to hard wire the 6 pin into the wiring to the 7 pin. I found a diagram and it appears that the wires just match color for color.

What's the best way to splice this? I dont really want to just scotch lock the connections, but cutting the wire in half then trying to push three wire ends into one butt style crimp connector is a pain, too. I think I may just solder them and not have to worry about it anymore.

I appreciate the help, guys!

Re: Cannot find a wiring adapter

I know it is a pain, but I soldered and used heat shrink on the last two trucks. Just use a big soldering iron and do it in summer while it is still warm. Also, it doesn't hurt to get an extra pair of hands.

Re: Cannot find a wiring adapter

Foxx,

I needed to add a 7 pin round plug on my wife's old Explorer and I found a wiring harness that plugged in-line to the factory trailer plug wiring.. You pulled a connector apart behind the bumper and inserted this male/female plug in the middle. It had all the wires comming out of the connector to go to the 7 pin plug.

I'm pretty sure I got it at Auto Zone or Wal Mart...

I'll look and see if I can find one.

If I remember, the 6 pin plug wired with the same "standard" wire colors, it was just missing the 12 volt "Acc" line used to keep the camper battery charged. If you can find one of these harnesses, you could just cut the 7 pin plug off and wire in a 6 pin plug.

An RV supply store might have one too.

Re: Cannot find a wiring adapter

Foxx,

How about One of These to get the wiring to the bed and One of These to convert to a 6 pin.

Re: Cannot find a wiring adapter

Yeah, what nascarj said... that's what I was talking about in my earlier post. I installed that same 7-pin set-up from that first Northern Tool link, and it works like a champ.

Re: Cannot find a wiring adapter

NascarJ, that looks like the ticket. I'll check out the local Northern Tool and see if they have one.

Thanks!

Re: Cannot find a wiring adapter

Lots of good ideas/sources for adding plug in bed of truck. Pretty standard to find/add a pig tail from local trailer place, just picking a good method to attach etc.

Have you consider cost/value and/or is it an option to change the plug on the trailer to 7 pin? Makes it standard for use with other vehicles?? Just and idea ...
