Carlisle Trailer Tire Concerns

I bought my 21' car hauler in 97 or 98 new. Came with car tires and the originals did me pretty good til 05 when I started to have tread seperate... Note: that was after two ALCAN highway trips and ALOT of additional mileage. Skimped along and before this trip up the ALCAN, I bit the bullet and purchased new D rated Carlisle ST225/75D15 tires. Figured I could now afford them and they would give me satisfaction/security going from VA to AK...... NOT!!!
A mere 6000 miles and 2 tires are shot , with what I think are broken belts and a third tire tread is fine, but has a big split, so it is shot too. God only knows what the 4th tire has in store.
So *** is going on. I was not over loaded 7500lbs total including the trailer... I plan on calling them and raising heck. Doubt I get anywhere, but wanted to get you all thoughts and/or warn you all....

In Edit: It was the front axle that the two shot tires were on and looking at the load and the springs, more weight was on the back tires... confirming they were no way overloaded. Also checked hubs and tires on EVERY fuel stop and tires were never hot... Lost a bearing in Laramie, WY though... Yea for me...lol

Re: Carlisle Trailer Tire Concerns

Yep, SOunds like Carlisles. And the best part is, they will say you ran them flat, even if you take it into the store with a thrown tread and fully inflated.

Re: Carlisle Trailer Tire Concerns

My local tire dealer tried to put Carlisle's on my 5'ver several years ago. They were made in China. I refused the tires and he re-ordered Denman's.. 15" E rated. I, too, took the Alcan and everywhere in between. I just put on my 2nd set of Denman's and believe they are best trailer tires around.

My 2 cents.

Re: Carlisle Trailer Tire Concerns

I have a 5th wheel that had Carlisle 225/75/15 "SPORT TRAIL" tires on it, I had one blow. I called Carlisle Warrenty line and they essentially sent me 7 new tires, basically no questions asked. Unfortunately the ones I had were made in the states and the new ones were made in China. We will see what happens. It is also a 2007 so I think that there warrenty states they will cover the mounting and balancing for the first year. I just can't remember where I saw it.

Re: Carlisle Trailer Tire Concerns

Good luck with the Carlisles! I have my spare mounted now as one blew up and trashed up the side of my trailer. It only went from my home to storage - about 10 miles. It blew up while covered and parked in storage. There is a hole you can put your fist thru across the tread. Denmans on the way! No more Carlisles - no way no how - not even as a spare!

Enjoy!

Re: Carlisle Trailer Tire Concerns

I would'nt have a Carlisle anywhere near my trailers. Bought a 6 X 12 cargo trailer with them on, got 85 miles to the 1st blow out, then 125 to the second one, then 5200 to the 3rd. LOL Trailer was loaded way under capacity.

Re: Carlisle Trailer Tire Concerns **UPDATED** Happy Camper

Well I can't gripe or complain as of now... Just called Carlisle customer service and they are sending me 4 replacement RADIAL trailer tires. Then will also reimburse me for the mounting and balancing.

Normally you have to take them in for dealer verification, but no dealers here in AK I guess, so they are sending tires right to my door!

Re: Carlisle Trailer Tire Concerns **UPDATED** Happy Camper

Should known I coulda looked here for info when my 2 tires busted. My 5er had 225/15 D tires fairly new and had about 1000 miles when the 2 rears blew, 1 about a month after the other. They made the 2 good with warranty from discount but also had them upgrade to E and pro rate the 2 front. This was back in Nov of 06. Maybe I should try going back and have'em swap for Denman?

Re: Carlisle Trailer Tire Concerns **UPDATED** Happy Camper

I have been well known information in the RV world for a number of years that these tires are NOT the best.

Re: Carlisle Trailer Tire Concerns **UPDATED** Happy Camper

I'm glad they took care of you, and you are happy. I have gone thru 2 sets of Carlisle tires on my Toy Hauler. Neither set had more than a
couple thousand miles on them before they blew out. I would suggest taking the new replacements and try to sell them at a discounted price, use the money to off set the cost of some better tires. I also have had Titan load range E trailer tires that were not any better. As suggested above look at RV.NET and see the tire reviews there. I finally went to a Toyo load range E this summer, not enough miles as of yet to tell if it was a good move or not.

Good luck either way!

Re: Carlisle Trailer Tire Concerns **UPDATED** Happy Camper

I went with Tow Master tires.
They have been used on the trailers from the factory that the ysell to haul Bobcats and tractors.
Had lots of experience with them doing that, so I put em on the Travel Trailer. Getting ready to head out for a 2,500 mile run so well see how they.
Mine are 14" so a ***** to find.

That's a nice thing of them to do.
With that said..........I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER run that brand of tire again!!!!!!!!!!
I ran them for 4 years on a 6x10 trailer that ran at MOST 1/2 payload.
Went through 8 sets of tires in that time period (2 runners and 2 spares comes up to 32 tires total).
Thought it was an axle issue or inflation issue or possibly heat related (I drive through deserts frequently). One of my friends and I were discussing a shredded tire mounted on my spare rack and he simply said "Carlisle brand.......right?" (we were not close enough to it to see the brand name). Found out quite a few friends of mine had been having the same issue as me. Went to store after that trip was over (and........seriously.......2 more tires gone) and purchased a different brand for all four wheels (2 runners and 2 spares). Went 3 more years on that set of tires with one blown tire.

Might be wise to "bite the bullet" and change to a reputable brand of tire before you become stuck in the middle of nowhere on a couple of bad tires (worth the expense to me for piece of mind anyway).

Good luck with it and safe travels.
