curious, have any on you stopped towing camper trailer due to fuel prices?

I usually drive to Fla from NY every year, this year we flew. With the current prices, I am rethinking my use of my truck. I wonder how the guys with TT are doing. I like camping also, but cruising around at 11mpg with a trailer has go to get expensive. Has this effected anyone else or are most people just truckin along?

Re: curious, have any on you stopped towing camper trailer due to fuel prices?

I have a 6000 mile trip coming up in june. I'm going no matter what. But the fuel cost is going up daily. We will still go camping, but just not as far away from home as in the past. Anthony

Re: curious, have any on you stopped towing camper trailer due to fuel prices?

i used to take small trips(60-100 miles) every other weekend..we've only been out with the trailer a few times so far this year..i have cut out many of the "just for fun" trips..we have a few longer trips(1000+ mile) planned for the year which we will stay committed to. i bought my first TT(toy hauler) and diesel truck a little less than 2 years ago and the price of fuel has DOUBLED..the price won't stop me..i'm an RV addict...i just can't get my fix as often as i'd like.. Re: curious, have any on you stopped towing camper trailer due to fuel prices?

We have sort of slowed down as far as how many barrel races we are planning to go to. However, we are planning more horse camping and trail riding trips. With all the money we have tied up in the horses, trailer and truck, we feel like we have to do some things regardless of fuel costs. The high fuel costs do hurt, don't get me wrong about that, but if I can't afford the fuel to go on some trips then I need to get rid of the horses and the trailer at the very least. Then I might as well trade my truck in for a rice burner .

Re: curious, have any on you stopped towing camper trailer due to fuel prices?

The one great thing about ATVs vs. horses is that you don't have to feed an ATV every day. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy the horses and treat them like part of the family, but sometimes I think it would be nice to have an ATV (or Harley) sitting in the garage collecting dust.

Re: curious, have any on you stopped towing camper trailer due to fuel prices?

We make the trip from NC to SC about once a month pulling the 5ver 260 miles one way. The fuel prices do iritate me but I put a 50 gallon tank in the bed of my truck and I buy my fuel in SC since it's ~$.20/gal cheaper than NC. I've gone as long as 6 weeks between fill ups but I had to put 82 gallons in last Sunday, cost me $226. I also stopped and topped off before crossing back into NC on Friday. That should last me till my next trip on May 29th. My usual 5,000 mile summer trip has been cancelled for this year as everyone that we visit came to see us in the last month. In fact one is still here. Since my dad passed in 2004 I have no desire to do any visiting in Fl but if I did the extra tank would have been a real asset with not having to buy the high priced fuel down there.

Just got back tonight from a long two-week trip thru New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico again, then home to west Texas. Last year we made a similar trip towing the 5er. But this year the PSD and 5er stayed home, because I could expect about 11 MPG average on that trip cruising at 62 MPH. Instead, we took the minivan and got about 22 MPG average cruising at 78 MPH most of the trip. Motel 6 costs more than KOA, but the trip total including fuel and motel or campground was cheaper using the car/motel instead of PSD/5er/campground.

Plus, 500 miles is a good day when towing. Today we covered 750 miles (Flagstaff AZ to home in Midland County) cruising at 78 MPH most of the way.

But early in April I gladly towed the 5er about 350 miles one way to a long weekend at Texas Motor Speedway. For that trip, the car/motel combo simply wouldn't work.

So it depends; camper for "camping" trips such as a race weekend, but car/motel for long highway visiting and touristing trips.

Re: curious, have any on you stopped towing camper trailer due to fuel prices?

I make the trip to Daytona every February then on to New Orleans for a week after the race.

A trip to Michigan.

2 trips to Bristol.

Plus several weekend 200-300 mile return trips locally and the odd 600 mile return trip into Quebec for races up here.

I'm going ot have to cut back! I get about 8.5 mpg on average. Hopefully I can still do the Daytona & 1 Bristol.

Michigan will probably have to go plus several races in Ontario & Quebec.

This fuel thing isn't good, it's going to start to affect everything! I owned a transport back in the mid 70's when we had our first fuel crisis and both our governments vowed that they'd do something about it but never did, now we're in a worse situation. We should have be looking into alternate sources of fuel 30 years ago. Look what Brazil has done since then!

One bright note, if there is one, is that the RV dealer will probably sell me the new 5th wheel camper I'm looking at for a good deal, I don't think they'll be moving them too fast this spring?

Re: curious, have any on you stopped towing camper trailer due to fuel prices?

I may be wrong here (have been before and will be again) but to me comparing USA and CAN to Brazil is like comparing a Red Delecious apple to a Red Grape. Miles of highway, numbers of vehicles, drivers, etc. Have heard that one of the problems with reformulated gas now is the lack of supply of methanol. Yes, I know we could be producing more if more methanol refineries had been built, but I have yet to see a report about how much we could ultimately produce and still have enough ground left to grow the food we eat. For every acre we put under cultivation for fuel will be one lost to food.

Re: curious, have any on you stopped towing camper trailer due to fuel prices?

We took a trip last month from Michigan to Florida for almost 2 weeks. The fuel for the trip came out to $706.00, averaging 10.04 mpg.
The summer travel season is just a few weeks away and I have to believe we will not be taking the long trips this summer. We did Cave City, KY last year but will probably stay in Michigan or northern Indiana for our week out this summer.
So yes, our travel miles will be cut down a bunch this year. We will still be camping, just a lot closer to home.

Re: curious, have any on you stopped towing camper trailer due to fuel prices?

smokey, I agree with you 100%. I am using the truck when i need a truck now. I use my little old car a lot more now. I cant justify commuting in my truck. But i cant pull my dump trailer with my car. I love the drive from NY to FLA, but the fuel prices now hurt a middle income guy like me. If you have money to burn, you can still get groceries in the H2, but if you are middle income, you have to be thinking about it more now.

Re: curious, have any on you stopped towing camper trailer due to fuel prices?

I plan to pull my 27ft jayco from okla.City to, Kansas,Colorado,Utah,Oregon,Washington,British columbia,(maybe to the Yukon)Alberta,Montana, Wyoming, and back to okla.City. I went to Alaska in 2004 and spent $2,020 on gasoline. I don't think this will be too much worse. I sit around all year waiting for the weather to get warm enough to do something so i am going to go as long as I can possibly manage it. I don't think it is going to get any cheaper in the near future. May as well spend it. the kids will when I am gone.
