disable brake controller dinger?

I have the built-in Ford brake controller. My trailer has some kind of wiring problem that occasionally makes the controller ding and the trailer icon briefly changes from green to red, then back. Sometimes, the truck also displays "Trailer Fault" on the dash display. The brakes and lights still seem to work fine.

The trailer is in the shop right now attempting to be fixed. But, I've got to use it on Thursday, and I'm not sure it will be fixed by then, in which case, I'll tow it anyway. It's only a 7x14 and I'll be towing 4 motorcycles, so I don't really need the trailer brakes anyway.

In case it's not fixed, does anybody know if there's a simple way to disable that beep/dinger noise that the truck makes when it has this problem (where it thinks the trailer has come momentarily disconnected)?

On my buddy's '04, he has a Draw-tite controller. It displays a fault when he hits the brakes (so I know it's a problem with the trailer, not my truck), but they still work and it doesn't make any noises, so it doesn't bother him when he uses my trailer. grrr... ;-)

Thanks!

Re: disable brake controller dinger?

Well, never mind. The place I took it got the trailer fixed. It had a short inside one of the hubs.

Re: disable brake controller dinger?

Mine did the same thing the one time I towed with it with my Toy 4Runner on it. I found out that the trailer wiring did NOT have a dedicated ground to the trailer frame.

First thing I did was make a dedicated ground to the trailer, plus wired an extension to the trailer cable and connector so it was a little longer.

I'll find out this Saturday if it worked or not since I'm taking the Toy down to our Summer Rock Challenge course.

Thanks,

Al

Re: disable brake controller dinger?

Ok, well that didn't work, which means I, too, have a short somewhere on the 4 brakes that my trailer has.

Can you give me any advice as to what to look for? I have no clue about trailer brakes, except both of my trailer axles have them.

Thanks,

Al
