On the livestock, horse, and equipment trailers I have the ground from electrical cords are all tied to trailer chassis and the grounds from brake circuit twin lead is also connected to chassis for grounding.
From my perspective brakes grounded through chassis have two chances to be grounded (wire in plug plus chassis through ball coupling) and ones isolated and only grounded through the plug have only one chance. Two chances sounds more safe to me.

36 feet on the floor Elite/Outlaw LQ horse trailer. Sooner 6 horse large dressing/ mid tack.
15 horses with good balance from being hauled behind a P'stroke.
It sounds like I will need to install a new controller on a separate line and mount it in the bed of the truck. Since I have a 2008 F350 does anyone know if I can just unplug the factory brake controller and plug in a controller that will work with disk brakes?

I am in the process of buying a new fifth wheel from Hitchhiker and wanted to add the disc brake option. Got a email back from HH yesterday and they told me that went to their local Ford dealer and borrowed a Ford F450 with the IBC. They use both Dexter disc brakes and Kodiak disc brakes. The Kodiak disc brakes worked fine but the Dexter disc brakes did not work. So it gets down to which brakes system you are using.

Don, did they tell you how to determine which ones your trailer would come with? David

The last disc brake trailer we built had Dexter 12 elec over hyd disc brakes,I believe the Carslile booster is compatable with for factory controllers, that is what we used and my truck ('05 F 250) operated the trailer perfectly. I have the factory Brake system. Unfortunatly I don't know about the new '08 models.
Carlisle controller is not compatible with Ford 2008 ITBC. I've contacted Ford and Carlisle with no success in finding a solution to intermittent "Trailer Disconnect" error on Ford DIC.

David, sorry for not replying earlier to your question. You can email Nu-WA Hitchhiker and give them the model of the trailer you want to order and they can tell you which disc brake system come with it. You might be able to request the Kodiak system. I saw a thread yesterday where Dexter claims that their disc brakes are now compatible with the Ford IBC.

Maybe, maybe not. Ford does not say the Ford integrated brake controller (IBC) will work correctly with electric over hydrailic brakes.
If it were me, I'd not install the IBC and instead find a controller that Dexter guarantees will work with your electric over hydraulic brakes. The $500 BrakeSmart controller will work with your electric over hydraulic brakes. Dr. Performance - BrakeSmart

The BrakeSmart is compatible with any trailer that has electric brakes. In addition, it is one of the only controllers that will work with electric/hydraulic brake actuators. It will work with any trailer out there, from one axle to four and even more with reprogramming. ...

Reason: add BrakeSmart
The last communication I read was Ford does work but they hadnt tested and/or did not want the liability at that time. Almost all current modern controllers will work with the Brake Actuators - providing a PWM (pulse width modulation) output. The only one Ive heard that didnt was GM (might be a specific year) - I dont know why.
went ahead and had all the parts for the ( IBC ) I had purched for my 2009 f550 4x4, The dealer had quite a time getting there computer to talk to mine in the truck and had to call tech support , so between all the grate minds the marriage was made and consummated. I pulled my first load of honey bees and had around 18000 lbs , between the auto down shift and the new (IBC) wow how SWEET IT IS!!!!
