DOT ?

I'm looking at hauling my girlfriends car out to Nevada this spring, and I didnt know if I needed to stop at weigh stations? A buddy of mine told me that some states have certain laws that say since I'm a truck traveling intrastate with a trailer I need to be weighed, is this true? Thank you

Re: DOT ?

If your trailer has a GVWR of less than 10,000 pounds,

And your GCW (gross combined weight of truck and trailer) is less than 26,000 pounds,

And your girlfriend is not paying you anything for the trip (other than normal girlfriend stuff),

And your truck is not registered as a commercial vehicle,

THEN you don't need to stop at any DOT scales.

If you appear to be a commercial hauler, then you might get stopped, but as soon as they determine you're just a guy and his girl hauling her truck cross country, then they'll wave you on.

What Smokey said.....speaking with AKDOT they way they explained the rule for a commericial vehicle was not only if you recieve payment for the shipment, but also if the item or items that you are carrying are used to make money, ie, Charter Boats, moving rental cars on a trailer, moving RV's or boats for resale, etc, etc.

I know some here have spoke about getting stopped moving their race cars and trucks, hard call here but it can be considered a shipment for Commerce. You are providing a service(entertainment)for(possible)money. I pull oversize weekly during the summer and one of the 1st questions, from an Officer that I don't know, is if I am a Charter boat service or private carrier. But even as a private carrier I have had a full safety check completed, brakes(5axles), lights, horn, height/width measurements.

I expect AKDOT is going to be busy this spring writing alot of tickets. Last year they started strict enforcement of anything over 102". We had more then a few guys here moving boats oversize with no oversize permits or proper signage.

Re: DOT ?

I'll tell you this first. Play dumb. In IL where I am from you dont go through weigh stations if your not commercial. Every state I have gone through pulling a single car trailer I have never once stoped at any weigh station or port of entry. I have been to 37 states pulling it also. All you have to do if you get pulled over is just tell them that you didnt know you had to go through the scale house since you never h ave had to before and just play dumb. Trust me it works I have had plenty of run ins with jerk DOT cops and I just play dumb and I have never gotten a ticket. The funny thing about it is I was doing it commercialy just had a small trailer and my truck was not marked with anything so they didnt know.

Re: DOT ?

Playing dumb will work...
However his truck IS over 10K GVW and that in itself puts him in the commercial truck class. He doesn't need a CDL or anything...and this will vary from State to State, but in some states any truck over 10K is reguirred to go through the scales.

Re: DOT ?

Mostly what the DOT regs. are about scales for pickups is anything in tow for a couple states, anything over 8 tons, and I dont remember theres a couple others I have seen all over the place. Really if the vehicle exceeds 10K GVW and is being used commercially it should have a DOT# posted on the side. About playing dumb to I find it fun since the cop cant prove anything and it gets them really mad.

Smokey depends on the states that he must cross. It will post before the scales what must pull in. some states like Ill is 7000 lbs. spme like cal say 3 axle tractors.

Be careful what you type. intRAstate means within the same state, intERstate, means between the states (or when you cross a state line).

Don't know where you got your number for Illinois, but the signs say 8 ton (maybe 6 ton, now I'm not positive). Either way it's not as low as you state. And if you are in Illinois, even though the sign might say 6 ton, if you pull into a scale house with a pickup and trailer they will give you a dirty look and probably give you some grief as well. It's like they feel their time is too valuable to deal with a pickup truck. One of those Damned if you do and damned if ya don't scenarios.

Re: DOT ?

My 18K tandem axle Volvo VNL770 is licensed as a Motor Home therefore I'm not required to meet DOT guidelines no matter what size or weight trailer I pull. This includes not having to fill out daily logs or stopping at weigh stations in any state.

I do however have small signs on either side of the cab stating my truck is for private use & not for hire just so DOT officers know I'm not a commercial tractor anymore.

If your worried about DOT just place a sign on either side of the truck stating the truck is for Private Use & Not For Hire and your good to go without worring about stopping at scales as long as your not being compensated for hauling the car and your truck isn't licensed as a commercial vehicle.

The signs in Illinois say 8 tons.....not 7,000lbs.

Florida uses a seperate site for agriculture, produce or livestock checks....a few miles down the road from the weigh station.
If you ask them, the men in blue will be happy to inform you that they are not connected with the weigh station in any way.

I haven't been through an Illinois scale in over two years after I was told over the loudspeaker, while on the scale, that I wasn't required to run a camper trailer through "his" scale.
Yes I had company signs and a transporter plate on and it was obvious that I was a commercial vehicle and.... my combined gross weight was over 8 tons.

OK folks, took out the trash, he said-she said horse hockey and all. Lets keep this on topic and civil.

Added in edit:

It has been brought to my attention my use of the phrase "took out the trash" was understood as my evaluation of what I deleted rather than my intended humorous way of saying I removed personal attacks, flames, blatant misinformation and in some cases a simple edit of a quote with a reply that was fine but the quoted portion of a previous post was not. Starting now I will no longer use the phrase "took out the trash" when referring to the fact that I edited and deleted multiple problem posts instead of simply deleting the thread altogether. I did not want to lose the good information in this thread, I simply wanted to get it back on track.
