Re: DOT regs.

I noticed that even in "Changin' Gears", there are a few errors in their interpretation of state licensing requirements. It's best to go to your state's specific DL manual to determine your state requirements.

Re: DOT regs.

If you are wondering what the requirments are to need a CDL I might be able to help you. If your vehicle and trailer has a combined weight of 26,001 lbs or more you need one, if the vehicle itself has a GVW of 26,001 or more you need one, if the vehicle has air brakes you need one,but then the part hat I can not help you with is the class of CDL you need. I have my CDL A with Haz-Mat endorsement. I am able to drive any truck out there pretty much. just go to your DMV and get the states CDL booklet and on the first couple of pages it explains everything you need to know about which license you need and which endorsements you need for the things you would be doing.

I see on the changing gears website there are a few states that require a "non-commercial" class A or B but what if someone from another state that does not require a "non-commercial" class A or B goes through a state that requires it.

Re: DOT regs.

If you're legal in your state, you are legal in all the states!

Re: DOT regs.

You are absolutely correct assuming you are doing commercial hauling. Recreational vehicles are one of the four exemptions to the CDL law. You can drive a Class A diesel pusher motorhome weighing 50,000 lbs and you are exempt as long as you are using the motorhome only for recreational activities. Someone with some advertising on that same motorhome for a business of any type would require a CDL.
