Driveline Shutter and Air Bags

Never had this problem with my 04 SD. With the new truck while going up an hill and the transmission downshifts a gear I get the dreaded drive line shutter. With the fifth wheel hooked up, within truck's weight limits, the rear end goes down almost three inches. The nose of the trailer is low in the front two inches. The question: If I use air bags to bring the trailer nose level, 2 inches, will that be enough to stop the drive line shutter or would I need to bring the rear of the truck back up to level, 3 inches. Hope this explanation makes sense. The new truck is a 08.

The shudder you describe is due to the change in the driveline angle with the weight on the rear axle. Airbags for the rear axle to restore the driveline angle will solve this completely.

Appreciate the reply. I talked to a person who tows a trailer similar to mine last week and he told me that he uses Timbrens because they do not require any adjustment. I went to their web site and noticed that the Timbrens do not start helping until after the first 1/2 inch. So I am guessing that if I have a 3" bed drop that the Timbrens would probably only correct for around 2 inchs. Does this make sense and should I spend the extra money for the air springs.

I use airbags because I like the adjustability. 5 psi when running empty. 30 psi while towing 34' fifthwheel (2650# pin weight). 35-40 psi while towing at night to put the headlights at or below factory aim.

With the bags on individual fill valves, you also get some anti-sway effects out of them.

Good luck.
