Re: Electrical problem wiht 5th wheel

Sounds like you have a ground and common wire touching someplace. Use one of those small outlet testers and check each outlet for proper wiring, including outside outlets. The tester is a plug that has lights to indacate incorrect/correct wiring. Can be purchased at hardware for a few bucks. Hope that helps.

Re: Electrical problem with 5th wheel

I'll tell you what happened to me, it may or may not help you. When I got my 5th wheel last year, I wanted to check out the Anode rod in the water heater. I removed the rod, which is also the way to drain the heater.

I replaced the Anode rod and refilled the water heater, later I was checking something else and realized that I had no electrical power in the camper. I am plugged into a GFI at home [swimming pool outlet].

I reset the GFI and it tripped again ??? I then used a conventional outlet and all was fine. After much head scratching and checking different things. I discovered that I had a combination gas and electric water heater, I thought it was just gas.

What had happened was that the camper was plugged in and the electric was on to the water heater, so when I drained it, I burned out the electrical element because of no water in tank.

Lesson learned the hard way again. I installed a new element and now make sure that power is off to the heater when empty.

I now no longer trip the GFI, why this was happening I'm not sure, maybe one of the electrical experts can figure that out.

Thats the end of my story, good luck with your problem.

Cheers, Ed

Re: Electrical problem wiht 5th wheel

GFCI recpts. are just funny animals. Sometimes they kick with a 1500 watt hair dryer in a steamy bath. Outside, it could be a perfectly good cord that has dew on it. Replace the plug with a properly rated regular plug, make sure you aren't on a GFCI circuit, and don't worry about it. Anything from moisture to too much wattage or amperage will kick these stupid things. Can you tell I don't like them?
