Exhaust Brakes.... Electronic or Mechanical?

Hey guys I was just curious, I am in the process of buying an exhaust brake for my 99 f350 six speed. I am curious if the electonic units that use the stock EBPV are any good, or if I need to buy the $1K plus unit. I have heard that the electronic units can damage the stock valve, but I don't haul an extremely heavy load. I would like to save all the money possible, but I don't want to short change my truck. If it is safer to buy the more expensive unit I will, but I was hoping I could get some opinions and facts about the two first. Thanks for your help in advance.

Kevin

Re: Exhaust Brakes.... Electronic or Mechanical?

I've had both. First I had a PacBrake on my 96 and it worked great . I installed a US Gear unit on my 99 and hated it . When it worked it worked good, but every year it had to be re-built . I replaced it with an SP Diesel electronic unit when I installed my 4" exhaust. It uses the EBPV. Does a good job . If I was going to tow all the time, I would get a PacBrake but for the towing I now do, the SP unit does the job .

Re: Exhaust Brakes.... Electronic or Mechanical?

How much did you spend on the SP Unit and where did you get it if you don't mind me asking? and are all the electric units the same? Better makes different kinds?

Thanks,
Kevin

The one that I have is $249.00 and the newer model is $349.00. The new one uses the cruise control buttons.

Re: Exhaust Brakes.... Electronic or Mechanical?

I've got an electronic one that uses the EBPV it works great, and with the manual trans it's even more effective. Of course the more expensive one will be more effective but IMO for the money the EBPV valve works great!

You buy it direct from http://www.spdiesel.com - last I heard. There are two versions. The one for stick shifters is about $200. The one for automatic trannies includes a torque converter controller and costs about $400.

No, there are differences in brands. The other major brand of "electronic" exhaust brake is the BD BrakeLoc. It's different, but I don't understand the differences. BD has one for a stick shifter for $205. You can order direct from BD or maybe save a coupla bucks by ordering it from a BD dealer.

Re: Exhaust Brakes.... Electronic or Mechanical?

i had the bd unit on my 99.5 7.3 automatic; it worked great for me, even slowed my 8k travel tralier on the downhills into california and the long eisenhouer tunnel from colorado to utah. the person who bought it still has it and has had zero problems with it to this day. he has 217k miles on it.
