Experiencing a problem with Jordan Ultima Brake Controller

My jordan has worked well for me for several years, but recently, it seems that the potentiometer may be dirty or worn because the first 20 percent of travel on the button no longer activates the brakes. And when the brakes do activate, they are at about 20 percent braking. Trailer has two axles with brakes on both. I set the max to about 10A. When the brakes come on, it begins at about 2 to 2.5 Amps.

When I get time, I will probably open the thing up and spray some de-ox on the potentiometer contacts to see if that fixes it.

Has anyone else ever experienced this problem?

Have you adjusted the brake shoes on the trailer lately?

Re: Experiencing a problem with Jordan Ultima Brake Controller

You may have a brake magnet gone south. I had that happen to me last winter. Jack up your trailer wheels & have some one spin each wheel one at a time & pull the emergency brake wire on your trailer. If the magnets are working on each wheel the brake will apply & the brakes will lock up. You need to reinsert the pin each time & check each wheel separately.

Re: Experiencing a problem with Jordan Ultima Brake Controller

I'm having a similar issue with my controller. The controller was updated by Jordan a few years back after is got really bad. I diagnosed myself that I definitely need to adjust my brakes on the trailer. I pulled a brand new trailer and I don't recall having the same issue with it. A good brake adjustment never hurts, but if that doesn't do it I would just call Jordan and talk to someone there. I know they say it doesn't need lubrication, but I'm not convinced.

Re: Experiencing a problem with Jordan Ultima Brake Controller

OK. The problem is not with the brakes or any part of the braking system on the trailer. I positively know the problem is with the controller.

The problem lies in the potentiometer that is actuated my both the cable and the plunger. It would be similar to a dirty volume knob on a very old stereo system. You turn the knob and maybe parts of the potentiometer surface are dirty, burned, or gone, causing less than desirable performance of the volume control function. This is what is happening to my controller.

What I am trying to find out is if others have experienced the same problem or if mine is an isolated incident. I am going to call the manufacturer, but it always helps to get some 3rd party info.
