First Time towing with a 6.0 diesel

Wow, this new 6.0 Powerstroke is awsome. This past weekend me and my Dad took one of our show cars to a show that was about 70 miles away. The car and trailer wieghted about 8000 pounds and you couldn't even tell it was back there with my truck. There were several 6% grades on the way to and back home from the show and the diesel had no problem keeping at 65 mph, even with the drivetrain completely stock.
There is no comparison between the 6.0 and the old 7.3 diesels. We took the same trip last year in my dad's 1999 F-450 with a 6-speed manual and we couldn't even hold 50 mph on several of the hills. I love the 6.0 and will never go back to a gas engine after this trip.

Re: First Time towing with a 6.0 diesel

If your dads truck had the 7.3 something must have been wrong with it because my truck will pull 8K up a 6% grade at 65mph with little problem. I love my 7.3 and would not switch to a 6.0, just my opinion. Wonder why Ford is dropping the 6.0 already??? IMHO they should have stayed with the 7.3 and perfected it, they were almost there, IMHO. All joking aside, I am glad you like your truck!!!

Those were our exact thoughs, so we took it to the shop and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. It is a F-450 work truck with 4.88 gears, but it seems like they should be better for towing.

I agree the 7.3 is a great engine, but this 6.0 is awsome and if Ford would keep it around a couple more years it could be the best light duty diesel engine on the market, but that's not the way Corperate America works....

Re: First Time towing with a 6.0 diesel

So is it for sure the 6.0 is being replaced by 6.4? Any idea when? I had heard this months ago but never any more info.

Re: First Time towing with a 6.0 diesel

The problem with your dad's truck may be the 6 speed manual. My truck is a dog in OD when pulling a trailer about 55-65 mph. There is no torque converter to unlock and allow the truck to build boost. I installed the SCMT and it adds fuel, which increases boost. My truck is now a joy to drive when towing. Just watch EGT's.
