First tow with 550 !

Well just got back from a 1000 mile 4 day trip from PA to ME with the 550 and horses. I can sum it up with 4 words.....
I LOVE THIS TRUCK !
What a difference from the 350. Even bone stock the 550 is just wonderful! Now for all the fuel questions, beats me, I didn't buy an economy vehicle, I bought a towing vehicle, and it sure does tow. Off the top of my head, just rough estimate, I would say in the 12 mpg range. Even running over that recap on Mass pike at 65 and ripping off the left side brake wires, with the monster brakes on the 550 I didn't even notice any difference until I got home. No smells, no drips, no squeeks, just some awsome pulling AND stopping power. I will say one thing, I can see where some people get concerned about the RPM and using the tow mode, just don't feel comfortable seeing those RPM jump like that, but it sure does slow the truck down. Truck born on 03/05 (sticker on door) so the program worked just fine for me, no problems/complaints at all.
Thanks for letting me brag, but just dammed pleased with this truck, good job FORD !

Re: First tow with 550 !

Glad to hear you like it.

Those brakes must be pretty beefy if they are bigger than the '05 F-350's brakes.

Re: First tow with 550 !

Well best guess for # is 16,000+ on trailer and then the truck so I would say 22 or 23,000 combined. Didn't get a chance to roll across the scales, but our next race is in mountains of WVA so I'm going to make a trip to the scales on the run down there. Don't have to be scared of them anymore!

Congrats on the nice rig . I keep on watering my 350 hoping it'll grow . But one day I'll have to get a real truck.

Re: First tow with 550 !

Forgot to mention that super duper cooling fan. Every time it came on I wanted to make the announcment to make sure your trays are are in their upright and locked position and prepare for take off! Must say it sure cools the engine. No problem with high engine temps, guage ran normal and as soon as it would move that monster fan would kick in and bring it right back. Just took some time to get used to it.
Thanks for all the comments.

I have a 550 six speed as well, gross out at 23k as well. What a truck! Everything about it is extra heavy duty.

Re: First tow with 550 !

You did a VERY smart thing getting the air suspension. I ended up cracking the welds on the trailer before purchasing an air-hitch.

How do you like the Kelderman?

Re: First tow with 550 !

I had an air hitch from TrailerSaver on a 2003 Fl-60, and loved it. I plan on getting one for my new 450 also. I am curious as to how you like the Kelderman also?

Re: First tow with 550 !

Love the Kelderman. Was up in the back roads of Maine running empty, well with 60 gallons of water in the back, and had a good chance to play with it. I do know if you do crank it up to high empty you can get some strange sounds out of the suspension! As for the ride, think the wife said it best, truck rides as good as the Buick. Going across the wash boards in the dirt road truck jumped across but then every thing I drove did that. Only complaint I have on it, is takes some time to fill up the bags in the back, could have been a bigger compressor, but overall so far I am impressed with it. Chariot installed it when they put the pickup bed on the back.

Re: First tow with 550 !

I wonder if you just put a tank to hold some air, that way it would solve the "on-demand" air problems.

Re: First tow with 550 !

Kelderman air ride, holly crap! I just called for prices and about fell out of my chair! Wow, what a nice system, anyone want to donate one to a guy who's 350 could use more payload? ;-)

Nice 550!
