First tow with my new to me truck

I got a chance to tow with my 2005 6.0 and TorqShift and have a question for those who have come before me. I did try the search function to find the answer but could not.

First off, this is my first automatic tow rig in a long while and my first Ford. Today's load was my boat (aprox 6500lbs) and so far I must say I am impressed with the performance of the trans and the 6.0.

My question deals with coasting. I did have the tow/haul mode on. It seems that when I come off the go pedel, the truck becomes quieter almost as if the engine died. I do notice the downshift in the TorqShift and notice the engine sound come back to life after the truck has slowed. Is this just merely the trans using the engine to slow the vehicle and is this normal?

I don't always explain things in print very well, so if I am confusing everyone, I will try and explain the situation better.

I am sure I have alot to learn about this truck, but any help would be appreciated.

Re: First tow with my new to me truck

Potato in the exhaust lol - I like that one.

Over a certain speed - maybe around 42mph or so depending on your rear differential ratio, when you let off the throttle (tow haul or not), the injectors are not firing. It's quiet because you are not putting ANY fuel into the combustion chamber.

Now for the potato part lol. Your turbo besides compressing air for intake also pushes your exhaust out on the turbine side. The variable vanes of the turbo in T/H mode will 'potato' your exhaust output, sort of like an engine brake.

Bottom line what you described is perfectly normal and also awesome. Enjoy your towing beast!

Re: First tow with my new to me truck

Thanks for the info everyone. I really do enjoy how the truck tows, for an automatic. It will take some getting used to, but I think I will like it.

Re: First tow with my new to me truck

Boss Tow described it very well. I would however get a real trans temp gauge and a EGT gauge for your truck.
