Flex-a-lite 45951 remote trans cooler worth it?

I'm considering a Flex-a-lite 45951 remote trans cooler for my truck. I'm currently running an E40D with BadBoy converter, shift kit & Mag-Hytec pan. I also have 40k GVW cooler installed up front (behind the intercooler & condensor). Temp on AZ highway with no load is hitting 220*. Want to know if anyone has had good/bad experience with this cooler or suggests another remote cooler. I don't have room for a cooler w/fan in front so a fan cooler needs to be installed under bed of truck. Thx

Re: Flex-a-lite 45951 remote trans cooler worth it?

I ahev not ever dealt with that setup. I am running the Trucool 45K (I think - it's the biggest one...) behind the grill and have no problems. If you are seeing that high of temps with the aux cooler, you may want to check some other things, fluid level, flowrates, etc. If they all check out, then it definitely won't hurt to have air flowing constantly over a cooler. Are your temps while driving highway or in stop and go traffic?

If you are seeing that kind of temperature at No Load I would suspect you have flow problem. Have your system flow rate checked before you spend anymore money on a new cooler. From what you already have I don't think you should be seeing that kind of temperature. Just my two cents.

Re: Flex-a-lite 45951 remote trans cooler worth it?

I see 220* on highway unloaded. Trans was just serviced so fluid level / quality is good. Did not ask about flow rate. I'll ask trans guy what he thinks.

I assume you are talking highway speeds...right? If so, then I believe you should have your flow rate checked. With the cooler you already have I don't think you should be seeing that kind of temperatures running unloaded. Just my opinion mind you.

Re: Flex-a-lite 45951 remote trans cooler worth it?

I added a second cooler in series and was disappointed to see that the AT temperature mirrored the engine temperature. The engine's mass, plus its position in the airstream makes it difficult to reduce the transmission's temperature.

Re: Flex-a-lite 45951 remote trans cooler worth it?

Maybe I'm being too picky. I noticed that my license plate is bolted to my front bumper directly in front of my trans cooler. I'm thinkin' about lowering the bracket so there's full flow. Whadya' think?

My tans guy says having 2 coolers in series can cause flow restriction & actually cause increased temp's. My original thought was to put the remote cooler in series with the radiator & 40k cooler I already have; not I'm not so sure. Talked to trans guy today & he's going to increase the cooler fitting size to 3/8 from 5/16 to see if that helps before I invest in another cooler.

It's still not clear to me if it's because of the hot temp in AZ or that my 40k cooler is behind the intercooler & condensor or both. Trans guy has same setup except his cooler is up front & he's running 190*.

Re: Flex-a-lite 45951 remote trans cooler worth it?

Has your transmission guy tested your flow rate? You could have a blockage in the oil cooler that is inside the radiator...unless you bypassed it when you hooked up your 40K cooler. Yes going to bigger transmission lines will help. But I still feel with your current setup you shouldn't be see those kind of temperatures unloaded. Just my two cents.

Re: Flex-a-lite 45951 remote trans cooler worth it?

You might want to try mounting it in front of the i/c and condensor... I tow about 8K in 90 degrees and never see over 175 on the highway, up to 190 going through town. BP.

Bingo! You're cooling the trans fluid with hot air. Try moving it all the way out front, or at least in front of the condensor. I guarantee you it will make a difference.

His test was that it should flow one gallon in 60 seconds. I don't know if that's normal, good or bad. I'll try the larger fittings but I'm not sure that means larger oil lines. Anyone know the proper flow?

Re: Flex-a-lite 45951 remote trans cooler worth it?

I 'believe' the proper flow rate is a quart in 15 seconds. So your flow rate seems okay. Changing the transmission lines from 5/16" to 3/8" should help. Moving the cooler to in front of the inter-cooler should also help. But I don't think you want to add more coolers to your current setup. I would either move the cooler or do the lines or both before doing anything else. Just my opinion.
