Fuel Stops in Ontario

I am going to be trailering to a horse show in Ontario, CANADA next weekend. I am trying to locate some reputable fuel vendors in the Great White North. Any suggestions? Travelling from Ann Arbor, MI to Collingwood, Ontario. I will be sticking to the major highways through London and then head North through Guelph etc. Any suggestions from the Canucks on these forums would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Fuel Stops in Ontario

Have a look at www.flyingj.com They have a center in London. Any Husky truck stop will give you good fuel. There are lots of them up here. If you are on the main highways, there are ample fuel stops.

Re: Fuel Stops in Ontario

Thanx for your swift response. I have not been driving in Canada for nearly 20 years. I had planned on hitting the Flying J in London but needed something to fill up in Collingwood. It is something of a resort destination on Georgian Bay so I am sure they will have fuel. Just needed a few names of reliable vendors.

On edit: Checking the Husky site online shows a London ON fuel stop but nothing further North. Any other suggestions?

Re: Fuel Stops in Ontario

It has been a while since I have been in that area as well, but I would assume you will be traveling up the 401 to 400 through Barrie to get to collingwood. I wouldn't worry about fuel (other than the price)for your route. Shell also has service centers up here that will work for you. Hope this helps. Just bring money, we'll take it!

Re: Fuel Stops in Ontario

You're not kidding. Noted in todays paper that the exchange rate was $.91US for $1.00 Canadian. That's a far cry from the last time I was in Canada, sailing in the Gulf Islands of BC. I think it was about $.65 to a dollar then. I am hoping all that Athabascan (sp?) tar sand drives your petroleum prices down. LOL.

Re: Fuel Stops in Ontario

I use the Flying J at London...it will be the exit immediately after Wellington Rd (assuming you are still East bound) and can be a bit of a surprise if you are not ready as the sign is rather well hidden. They move a LOT of fuel and are definitely the cheapest you will find. If all goes well you should make Collingwood and back on one tank. Here in the Sarnia area (at the Cdn end of I94 and I 69, and across the Bluewater bridge, I use the Petrocan cardlock...but that is of no use to you. If you happen upon a BUSY Sunoco station with Sunoco Gold Diesel (min cetane 47) you will find that the IH engines really like the change....quieter and smoother!
Safe trip.

Re: Fuel Stops in Ontario

I have not had ANY problems with Diesel fuel from the Petro Can stations I buy my fuel from across Canada. Usually if a station is offering Diesel here, it will be good quality as they would not be selling it if it did not sell in Quantity. I think you can be very comfortable in using any fuel you find on your trip. JMHO

Re: Fuel Stops in Ontario

Thanx. Here in the States, there are lots of smaller self service stations that will have one pump for diesel and they might go through a tanker full once a month. I prefer to fill up at truck stops that have the tank cars lined up filling the tanks. My preferred local stop goes through 11 tank cars a day!

Re: Fuel Stops in Ontario

Just stick with any station that sells diesel along any of the major highways (4xx series highways) and you'll be fine. Stick with brand name stations (Husky, Petro Canada, Sunoco, Shell, Esso) and all will be fine. Sunoco Gold Diesel is preferred.

Regards

Re: Fuel Stops in Ontario

I filled up at the Husky last week, on my way to Barrie, it's on Hwy 400 at Exit 64A, Simco Rd. 88. You can get deisel & gas and exchange 20lb propane tanks, can't get propane refills.

When I'm down at Delaware Speedway (just outside of London Ontario), I fill up at the Flying J in London all the time, fill propane tanks there and they have a dump stantion. My wife an I have stayed there overnight a few times as well, they have RV parking.

There's also a 5th Wheel Truck Stop in Milton (Hwy 25 & 401) on the south side of Hwy 401.

There's a couple of Service Centers on Hwy 400 too both North & Southbound, one at the bottom, just north of Toronto and another in Barrie. I prefer the Husky, lots of truckers use that one!

There's 2 or 3 Service Centers on Hwy 401 between the border and Hwy 6 too, and there's a 5th Wheel & a Husky just west of London too but the Flying J is the best, if you need propane or to dump your tanks. There's the Blue Beacon truck wash at the 5th Wheel in Dorchester too.

Hope this helps, email me if you'd like any more info in this area, we travel these roads almost evey weekend from race to race!
