Goodyear Wrangler HT for 5th Wheel..Am I Okay???

Replacing all four tires on my 5th wheel. Previous posts resulted in some great info from Smokey and others. I have pretty much decided to purchase Goodyear Wrangler HT in size Lt235/85R16, load range E. Wanted to get Michelin XPS Rib but budget is a little tight.

Does anyone have feedback on this particular tire that might be helpful? I don't want to make a mistake and, as usual, I really trust the help that I get from all of you......Thanks in advance.

Re: Goodyear Wrangler HT for 5th Wheel..Am I Okay???

Hmmmmmmmmm..... Goodyear won't show me a Wrangler HT in that size. Click here.

Of the ones they will show me, the RT/S has closest to a hiway rib tread, which is what you want on a trailer if you don't spend a lot of time in snow country.

If you intended to write Cooper Discoverer H/T at click here, then that'a a good 'un too.

Re: Goodyear Wrangler HT for 5th Wheel..Am I Okay???

Thanks for the reply, Smokey. Please see www.goodyear.com/rv/products/product_wrangler.html The size I need is available from the local Goodyear dealer. I'm just not sure about this particular tire and wondered if some of the forum folks had any experience with it.

As always, your help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Goodyear Wrangler HT for 5th Wheel..Am I Okay???

Do not know what your trailer weights but I just replaced 6 Goodyear Wrangler HTs tires after 7 years in service. I had i blowout & one tire started to have tread seperation & 3 others were starting. After having said that, I can really not say anything bad about the Wrangler HTs tire. Have had a few friends that have had massive blowouts & tread seperation issues but Goodyear always backed the tire.
I did not go to Goodyear on the replacement I went to a Bridgestone Vsteel tire. I believe it is a R265. The tire dealer & my son, who used to work for Bridgestone, both highly recommended the tire. We will see how it stands up against the Goodyears down the road. BTW, all the tires replaced had severe tread chipping & root cracking in the treads. As well, they all showed signs of side wall fatique. Remember these tire where on a tri-axle 5ver weighing about 17,000 ibs 99% of the time. Pretty good life for a tire under alot of heavy use about 100,000 miles on them.

Re: Goodyear Wrangler HT for 5th Wheel..Am I Okay???

I received my 2002/2003 Carriage Fifth Wheel/Model F35KS3 with those same OEM tires. Empty weight was 11,600. Loaded for non fulltime trip is 12900. Axle weight is 10500. Ran them at 80 psi.

They lasted about 10000 miles. Then left rear separated/broke radial ply. Next day right rear failed from road pothole. Right front was then overloaded for about 30 min with that failure...until I could find a safe spot downgrade to stop. Told my tale on this website and another 35 foot fifth wheel had virtually the same sequence of failures.

Another guy read my info and told me to go Michelin XPS (all steel) and never regret it. I did. Bought them for about $160/tire at Costco. Sams Club also sells them.

Costco inflated them with 100% Nitrogen standard. I have 3000 miles on them now and they are great! They run cooler than GY/HT and any sway is almost undetectable.

Save your money and trouble. Go with the Michelins XPS when you can afford it...

I now run the XPS on my 2002 PSD. Use Nitrogen per Costco installation.
...great tires

The GY/HT is on the website. It also says it is suitable for RV Trailer. Right...suitable for big problems!

Re: Goodyear Wrangler HT for 5th Wheel..Am I Okay???

I've been very happy with any Goodyear I've owned for weight handling, but I think they wear faster than some other brands. (Why spend more money for a tire that doesn't last as long?) I have been buying General tires lately, and am very happy with them for quality and price. I have Bridgestone's on my truck, but they aren't lasting as long as the General's that came on it from the dealer.

As for my trailers, it's General's on all of them.

Re: Goodyear Wrangler HT for 5th Wheel..Am I Okay???

We have a Trails West 4 horse living quarter horse trailer that came with the Wrangler HT 235/85R16 tires. Our full loaded weight runs around 14,000 pounds. There were 4 tires on the ground and 1 spare. Since we got the trailer in 2001, we have lost one tire to road hazard and 2 disintegrated for unknow reasons on the highway. I check inflation and tire condition compulsively and don't drive excessively fast. Do I have bad luck or bad tires? I don't know for sure, but with 60% of the Wranglers gone in less than 25,000 miles, I am going to replace with the Michelin XPS Ribs. I realize the Michelins are relatively expensive, but if they last longer, they may end up being cheaper than replacing with the Goodyears.

Re: Goodyear Wrangler HT for 5th Wheel..Am I Okay???

I have run through several sets of HT's on my last 3 trucks mainly because I can get them from work at a reduced price. I have had no real issues with them. Occasionally I will get one with the side wall seam bulging a bit but dealers have told me not to worry about it and it never has become an issue. I can usually get about 45K miles out of them. I run them for 8 months of the year then run Michelin XPS traction for the winter months on a spare set of rims.

Re: Goodyear Wrangler HT for 5th Wheel..Am I Okay???

My 2001 37' Travel Trailer came with that tires. No problems in about 4,00 miles. However, I will replace them when they get 6 years old with Michelin XPS Ribs. I have always had great luck with Michelins.
