The class was called "Statics" and I barely squeaked by with a "C". It was a bear. Thanks for bringing back memories of "moments of inertia" and huge drawings that each member had to be analyzed as to whether it was in tension or compression and what load was in kips (thousands of pounds). Basically you determine the load's force and direction
using trigonometry then refer back to the tables for what kind of member you need.
Wow! Looks great! Very impressive work. Your welds and prep work look awesome!
Thank you for saying that NCfarmboy! After yesterday I need all the encouragement I can get!
I’m an old wore out weldor who can’t see anymore, and as lost just about all eye to hand coordination! The worst part I haven’t welded professionally / steady since 1987! Shouldn’t post these pictures, everyone will laugh at me. Mig welds done yesterday on the gooseneck tube, and the horizontal arm to the vertical leg.
Finished the adapter on Sunday, loaded it up on the trailer yesterday, and took it in for a quote for sandblasting and powder coating today. Four times what my buddy was charged. Guy wanted $2,000.00.
One more powder coater to quote, but also looking into having Line-X spray it, got a quote from a mom & pop bed liner outfit for $550.00, but this thing will not fit into his shop!
But the cost to finish it drives home a question I'd wondered about: When you figure in the costs, how much less expensive is this than buying a gooseneck trailer? (I'm not throwing rocks here, because I live in a glass house. There are many projects I've done that would have been cheaper to have bought, even without figuring in time. But they were fun to do.)

Your post reminded me to add up my bills. I will have it sprayed with Line-X on Friday morning to the tune of $1,100.00. So not counting my labor………… I’ am $771.27 ahead of the game, but that number is what I was quoted for a new PJ 14,000-pound gooseneck trailer. This trailer is rated at 15,680. Not much difference is there? Yup I would have been way ahead if I would have just ordered a new trailer. How dumb am I?

First off I’m the world’s worst painter. I refuse to paint in my shop, and here in western Washington the last 2-weeks in August usually don’t rain!

Oh I’ve done worse! I usually go in the hole / loose money, because I’ll start to build something trying to save a few bucks, break a tool / decide a new tool would work better or what have you!
When completing a project like this my wife of 35-years has a saying, in fact just last night she said it again, “At least it keeps you out of the bars!” Now the strange part, I’ve never drank, only been in a hand full of bars. Have nothing against it, it’s just not for me, not tuff enough I guess!

The one thing I don't understand is how it connects to the trailer frame. I saw the tab and slot arrangement of the "padeye" pictures, but are there bolts that go through the tabs? Perhaps the 1" Grade 8 you mentioned?
Nice work. How much it costs is not the point.

Yes Steve it will bolt to the trailer with two 1-inch grade 8 bolts, and I decided to add a 3/4-inch bolt through the trailer’s side C-channel into the flange of the W-8x15#. You can see in the first picture where the red arrow is pointing, I also welded flange to web gussets to strengthen the flange, did the same thing to the C-channel under the trailer. All together it will have a 2 5/16-inch ball, four 1-inch grade 8 bolts, and two 3/4-inch grade 8 bolts.
Hey I have to say thats I really nice job on the adapter. Here is one of my projects I did a few years back. This trailer was origianly a goose neck some one removed the gooseneck and made a bumper pull out of it.

Dave I should have got you to build mine, or at least help!
Got it all hooked up this morning and took it for a test drive. Still a lot of little things to do before it’s 100% complete!
FYI: the padeyes would not marry up this morning, know why? The Line-X is so thick when I forced the adapter up into place with screw jacks as the padeyes came together they just peeled the Line-X! I took my digital caliper and checked the thickness of the Line-X .090. Not to bad, can’t believe powder coating would be that thick. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...idenvoyage.jpg
