Re: Got to see this...

I like the part where they get out and manually turn the car over so it can be push off the road way. Try doing that with a tow boss F-350.

I like where someone points out that he didn't have enough weight on the hitch and he says the hitch couldn't take that much weight, so he knowingly loaded it lightly.

He sorta sounds like some people here: "I've towed it 10 years and never had a problem!!!"

Except for this trip, we find it's just luck.

Let's see, 1000kg trailer weight(2200lbs) and 60kg tongue weight(132lbs). Right at 6% tonque weight with a single rear axle. That ought to be stable-NOT!

Re: Got to see this...

It doesn't say he had 60 kg of vertical weight on the tongue; it says that's the limit. Maybe he was being extra-careful not to exceed the 60-kg limit?

1200 kg limit on trailer weight; 60 kg tongue? I thought Honda'd be smarter than that? Maybe it was a 600/60 kg-capacity hitch? There's something missing here.

Re: Got to see this...

I spent a week in England a month or so ago in the Manchester/Derby/Nottingham area and saw quite a few sizable travel trailers being towed by very small vehicles like this. They just do everything with smaller vehicles. Shoot, a Mini is an average sized vehicle in daily traffic over there.

One thing that probably saved those people in the link was the fact that all the semi's are fitted with baracades between the wheels to keep small vehicles from being able to get underneath the trucks from the side. I thought that was a very good thing. We should adopt that here in this country. Probably helps the trucker keep control of the truck and not compound the disaster because of a car rolling around under the tires.

I don't know...I'd feel better if people operated equipment within their limits and the limits of their vehicle...

Putting a cow catcher on a train is fine with me as the cow just won't learn to stay off the track...putting a car catcher on a semi just tells me that there are alot of people who don't have a clue what they're doing...

Re: Got to see this...

This was the least of what I saw in Ireland, just happened to be able to get a photo of this one.

photo here

Doesn't seem to bother them. It did, however, bother me while I was driving on the left side of the road trying to pass these on roads that are about a lane and a half (our size) wide.

On Edit: sorry, photo insert doesn't seem to work here.

Re: Got to see this...

I am a regular on TheMalibuCrew.com a forum for Malibu owners, wakeboarders, and skiers. These boats are 3500-5500 lbs (depending on the model)loaded for a trip. It seems that every week there is a newbe that asks 'can I tow my new boat behind my Honda CRV or something like that.... It's very hard not to scream at the ones that say "I've done it and never had a problem..." I usually like to point out that sure the light truck, minivan, econo-box WILL pull your boat, but how ya gonna stop it when you're going down a windy grade with no guardrail and the guy in front of you has to stop quick??? You are going to be a sad little boy when you push him off the clif, killing his family...or yours. (sometimes it convinces them...) I pray I'm not anywhere near them!

I would agree with you, but have you looked at the people driving on either side of you on the interstate lately? The reality is that it's just luck that they get from point A to point B safely. Driving is not in the top 5 things they are thinking about while headed for their destination. Sitting in the drivers seat they are no more engaged in the task of driving than they are when sitting in the favorite chair at home, they pay just enough attention to occasionally make course and speed corrections.

For fifth wheel applications on the Focus, you could probably get a Hitch-buddy to keep the weight off the rear axle and get increase breaking. Umm, I mean braking.

The wagon is rated to tow 1,000 lbs, I was going to tow a 4 x 8 folding trailer from Harbor Freight that weighed around 250 lbs, leaving around 750 for payload.

By the way I have a Focus hitch and receiver setup, brand new in the box, and the receiver and ball have their own carrying case. If you are interested, message me.
