I was of the impression that GVWR of (say for conversation) an 2001 F250 diesel is 8800#.
Does this rating apply for a camper as well as pin weight if a 5th wheel is towed? I didnt think the rating changed just because of what you tow or haul.
What is the actual wording from a vehicle mfg regarding GVWR?

The GVWR apllies to whatever weight you have on the truck itself. So, whether it's a camper or trailer you are hauling, you can only have as much weight on the truck as what the truck is rated for. If you know how much the truck weighs, you then add weight of gear, fuel and persons in it, then you subtract that from the GVWR, that will give you the amount remaining that you can legally add to the truck. Also, that weight could be the weight of a camper, pin weight on a 5-er or hitch weight on a tag-along trailer. Hope this helps.

The GVWR is the max weight you can have on the truck tires. So for an F-250 with 8,800 pounds GVWR, the GVW is the weight on the two truck axles when you are wet and loaded and sitting on the CAT scale. Add the front and rear axle weights to get GVW. If your GVW is more than 8,800 pounds, you're overloaded.
It doesn't matter whether the weight on the truck tires is from a tag trailer hitch weight, or a fifth-wheel hitch weight, a slide-in camper weight, or a load of something heavy in the bed. If the CAT scale says you have more than your GVWR on the two truck axles, you're overloaded.
