Just got back from Texas towing my 30'5er with my 04 F350 SRW.
When starting off up any incline while towing, it is very difficult to shift low to 1st. If I take my time shifting and don't worry about traffic behind me, it will shift, but will not be rushed.
Anyone had similar problem with 04, 6.0L? Is it clutch adjustment or do I have to learn to double-clutch?
Truck has 27,000 km. or about 18,000 miles on it.

Never had a problem with mine. Just ease off the line in low and slowly bring up the revs and then go to first. No need to double clutch. I use low at least once every day and make the shift to first just to get the feel and loosen up the parts. Never need to force it.

mine is the same way but mine is a 99.5 with the 7.3.it is hard going in to first and low, and it is really rough coming out of low. mine got a little bit smoother when i added lucas tranny stabalizer to mine.

Mine's the same too!!!
I move the shifter to the right and then back to 1st to waste the time it needs. Double clutching doesn't add anything to speed it up.
This reminds me of the Mack 5sp Maxidyne's that I drove in my early years of trucking. Now those you did need to double clutch.

I have this problem as well, it seems that taking the additional time to move the shifter past 1st and 2nd, towards 3-4, then back makes it go in easier. But at this point, Ive lost alot of the speed I got in low. Seems to me that the trick is to not rush it at all.

Just think of that BIG OLD 13" diameter clutch disc spinning inside the pressure plate/flywheel at about 3000 rpm, and in the short period of time it takes to move the gearshift from low to first Your synchronizer is trying to slow that clutch disc down to about 1200-1400 rpm to allow first gear to engage. Anything You can do to ensure clean clutch disengagement will help, like making a special effort to push the clutch pedal all the way down. Shifting at a lower RPM helps the most, less pent up energy for the synchro to over come. Reduces stress on the driveshaft, U-joints & rear axle too by shifting at a lower RPM.

294,000 mi & NO Problems, LUK Clutch, and the Cat is buried in the back yard!
It's just the crappy ZF tranny showing it's colors.
I really didn't think mine was all that bad until my son bought a 04.5 Dodge CTD 6spd, and the Dodge 6spd shifts like a normal 6spd should and a whole bunch smoother than the ZF tranny does. Dodge even labled there shift patteren correct, 1 thru 6.
Another huge ZF fault I noticed is when in 1st gear and you try and speed shift (shift at a normal movement like a tranny should shift) to 2nd, you will most likely go into reverse while moving forward
I found that out one night trying to keep up with bad guys when I was flipping a U-e I seen my back up lites come on and didn't let out the clutch so I got lucky

Buy UNION work UNION. It pays off in the long run Define Union: A labor Union is nothing more than united workers with a common goal for better working conditions.
We all are in some sort of labor Union, some are just larger than others with better working conditions!
I have had two of the 6 speeds and both got silky smooth on the L-1st shift after much use.
I had the same problem with ti being VERY notchy and sometimes truck would have stopped rolling before I had it in 1st.
IT did this until I got a heavy trailer that required every stopped take-off be done with L. With lots of use it quickly got silky smooth and goes between l and 1st as easily as it does between 2 and 3.

thks everyone who responded. Took my truck to local Ford dealer today, and guess what----- they told me what you have already said, that it is the transmission and nothing can be done. Guess I'll just have to be patient on my towing shifts from rest, and hope the tranny gets better with use.
