HD Wheels...

I have been toying around with switching to 19.5" tires and wheels for my SRW F350, but just found that Toyo is now making a "E" rated 285-75-17 AT tire that they rate at 3,970# - just what I've been looking for to give me a margin hauling a heavy camper around.

However, I can't find any manufacturer that will rate wheels to use this capacity...

Any help or ideas? Currently I'm running the stock 16" wheels, so upgrading would be necessary any direction I go....

I assume you have a SRW. Isn't the rear axle rated for just over 6k? 3400# wheels are already stronger than the the axle. Using the higher rated tire will just give more piece of mind for less chance of overheating.

If you haven't already, you might email or call them to see if they have any suggestions. Also try Custom Wheels - Stockton Wheel Service .

As the other poster mentioned, at #3900 per tire you will prolly be over the axle rating anyway. If you want the extra margin of the Toyo tires, they will still be safer on existing available 17" wheels even at the 80 PSI that the wheels are rated for.

However, if you are springing for new wheels and tires anyway I doubt if the 19.5" would be that much more $$$.

I've gone rounds with the axle rating several times before - Ford does rate this axle for 6,830#, which is identical to the tire rating..... Makes one wonder....

The axle manufacturer, Visteon, is next to impossible to find their rating, but from an inside source at my local repair shop found out they rate it at 9,000#.

Even if you took the Ford rating, I feel there is a greater margin of safety on the axle rather than the tire - so I've been looking to upgrade the tires. Since the stockers on the '03 are 265-75-16, I have to upgrade wheels also. If I'm going to upgrade, I don't want to simply buy another set with the lower 3,400# rating.

At this point, all sources have stated that Toyo is always on the front edge of load rating, with the aftermarket wheel companies seldom catching up for several years.....

So, I figure if I'm going to upgrade soon, I'm stuck going to the 19.5" - however, even Rickson at this point is shut down for some unknown reason. The only option is going with the Chinese made Vision wheels (since I have SRW)....

Not my preferred option - just hoped that someone had some insight that I can't find to solve this problem.

If you don't mind me asking, now that you are out there researching, what is the average weight rating of these new aftermarket chrome alloy wheels in the 16,18,20 size ??? I run a 16x10 aftermarket wheel with a 315/75/16 D rated tire, I have went to a bigger fifth wheel and would like to go to a E rated tire, goodrich tires have a 305/65/18 with a 3540 lb rating that would work for me, naturally I will have to buy new rims, I did not see many tires out there much over 3600 lbs in E rated, have not looked at a lot of brands, any suggestions ???? Have no idea what these rims are rated at, be kind of a waste of time for me if the wheels don't measure up to the weight rating of the tires ???? Sorry for busting in on your guestions, but thought you might have some answers, or anyone else Thanks

I'm 99.9% sure Ford de-rates their axles to match the stock tires. I found out E350 cutaways are all built essentially the same. Its only the final dress (decal, front rotors, wheels, and tires) that determine if its a SRW or DRW... and it equates to a ~1500# loss of rear GAWR on the former.

IMO, a 19.5" tire and wheel is still going to be sturdier. Not only is there less sidewall, but it also has (usually) a steel ply in there also. Should also have less rolling resistance as a result.

I got my Visions from Rickson. They were the best deal I could find - even when factoring in freight across the country. Their basic steel wheels should still be available... they are rated for 500# more, but cost a tad more than the Visions, and would take about a month to ship.
