Interesting article, but I'm not sure why they removed the bypass on the tranny since if it's cold enough or the coolers get pluged you loose lubrication to the rear of the tranny and could destroy it from lack of lubrication even w/o seeing a temperature issue.

Re: Heavy Duty Trans cooling for Super Duties

I agree that they should have not removed the bypass. It's there for a reason. One would assume that these trucks are driven in conditions OTHER than high ambient, high load conditions. I.E. driving TO the fire in winter time.

It's like removing an engine thermostat to try to prevent overheating under heavy load at high ambient temperatures. Just junk logic.

Re: Heavy Duty Trans cooling for Super Duties

Removing the bypass will get you more fluid flow thru the coolers because none of it will bypass the cooler.

Not all engines are the same but removing the thermostat on your PSD will allow coolant to bypass the radiator. It has the opposite effect as removing the trans bypass.

Re: Heavy Duty Trans cooling for Super Duties

The bypass is not a thermostat as they make it out to be, removing the bypass is fine, just would not jump in it in a very cold climate and take off.

Disagree. Removing the tranny bypass valve is a really dumb idea. It's there in case the tranny cooling system gets stopped up for some reason. If that happens without the bypass valve to route the ATF back into the tranny, the ATF will stop circulating and the tranny will die a very nasty death in a very short time.

Yea but you don't have to pay the big bucks that most members do when a tranny does

Yea but you don't have to pay the big bucks that most members do when a tranny does go south so your opinion and experiences is just not germane for the majority of the members here and I think your advise is wrong for others to follow.

I'm quite frankly really surprised at your comment quoted above when I considered you're a knowledgeable tranny guy up until now.

Keep the bypass is my recommendation unless you can rebuild trannies basically cost free

Re: Heavy Duty Trans cooling for Super Duties

the bypass was implemented when they went to the stacked plate air to fluid coolers, mainly in case of a restriction for cold weather operation. I implied that it was ok only to remove it in a situation when cold is not a problem. You stop the cooler up enough with debris to open the bypass you have other concerns. I would say for the average joe to leave it on, in my case its removed, I do have a bigger cooler with higher flow rate, plus I live in Oklahoma, don't get cold here very often. I apologize to come off with an attitude, I get a little bent when my ideals are classified as "dumb".

Thats the way it is when you are dealing with transmission experts like Smokey and Larry. Larry is even an expert on who is an expert.

Re: Heavy Duty Trans cooling for Super Duties

I wonder how munch money these guys spent to figure this out?? I could have saved them a bunch of money!!! Simply 86 the tiny oil to air cooler and install the one from a 6.0 and be done with it!!!! With all those coolers I hope they did a flow test when they were done. I am enjoying the 40 degree drop in temps, the hottest I can get it now is 150 and I don't have the rad cooler. But who listens to me??
