Hey ya'll, I'm trying to get my trailer brakes up and going. Bought a new tractor and am taking it to my small ranch in MO. 8000 lbs worth with the trailer. Here's my problem....
First, the owners manual sucks. It doesn't tell me exactly which relays are for the trailer brakes. There are three power unit boxes next to the master cylinder and it shows them in the OM but only the main one has a listed diagram to tell the relay info. I'm wondering where the heck do I plug the relays in.
Second, Fords factory receiver's trailer plug socket is a seven pin. My trailer is a five pin. I bought an adapter and all the lights on the trailer work fine but I have no trailer brake control. It's possible I must first figure out where the heck the relays go first to know if the adaptor is keeping the wiring sequence from being correct. Can anyone help me here?
Thanks,
RR

Should have been a piece of paper in the package with the relays that show exactly where they go. Do you have voltage on the pin for the brakes when you activate your controller manually. Does you controller show when you have a connection. I will look and see if I still have my paper from the tow package. You may have a problem with the brakes themselves or the controller also. What type of controller are you running, some have to see the connection before it will put voltage out....
The relays go in one of the little boxes next to the big fuse center under the hood. Should be the one just to the passenger side of it. If that doesn't work, try putting them in the other one!
first get a $10 test light and figure out what is what. look at the lid to the 7 pin plug on your truck it should tell you what is what. if still no luck, then maybe the trialer is different than the truck. i had this happen one time with one of those old school 5 pin thingys. if i recall i had to switch the constant hot with something else, because in my case as soon as i plugged in, the trialer brakes were on so i could not move. my advise, is whatever the trouble, i would start at the trailer, it is probably the wrong issue, plus the truck is more complicated than the trailer. good luck.

If you only have a 5 pin, you probably don't have trailer brakes! Left turn, Right turn, Marker, ground, and reverse, no room for brake wire
