Help me decide - '00 F-250 or '06 F-350

I have a choice between 2 trucks and I’m looking for your opinions on which truck will better suit my needs.

The truck will be used for pulling a camper (me, wife & 3 children). I would like to be able to pull a trailer with a skid steer, boat, car/pickup hauler, dump trailer hauling and any other type of hauling needs. I don’t have a camper or the trailers mentioned here and I’m starting with the truck.

Truck choices:
1. 2000 F-250 7.3L diesel, 324,000KM (202,000 miles), 4x4, super cab, long box, single rear wheel
2. 2006 F-350 6.0L diesel, 225,000KM (140,000 miles), 4x4, crew cab, short box, single rear wheel

Which one should I pick and why? Which one is a more capable hauling rig?

'IF' you put aside the 7.3 vs 6.0 maintenance issues, the 2006 is the obvious choice.

Please expand on the maintenance issues.

Not so obvious for a newbie like me . Why?

search 6.0 problems, head gaskets, studs, spend a few days researching.
I defer to someone who has owned one.
I'm happy with my 7.3.

By 2006 they worked out most of the problems. With the kids you will like the crew better.

If money were not an issue that would be the seller to me.

I pick #2. Have had both, and #2 is the hands down winner for everything I could think of to type. Good luck

A 7.3 with 200K is still a young engine. A 6oh with 140K ain't so young. If it hasn't had major work done yet, it soon will. No warranty on either? I say go with the 7.3 and save the headaches!

I bought an old (95) F250 in 2000 (still have it) and several times have wished I had the F350 SRW for the increase in GVWR (in 1995 the F350 SRW was 9900, the F250 was 8800). I bought an extended cab F250 in 2000 and almost daily have wished I had a full crew cab. My son cannot fit in the back seat even with nobody and nothing else in the truck. He was 12 years old when when we bought it, is now 6'4" and the back seat is not even an option.\

I would have no use for a short bed (I haul way too much stuff way too often) but the other advantages of the 2006 far outweigh that one issue and that is also for my needs, not yours.

My choice would be the F350.

Since you mentioned being able to haul as your priority, I would say the 06 for the increased GVWR.

Here's another option, go find a F350 7.3 CC and buy that. Why are you limited to these two choices?

I agree with Blackout. Find a crew cab LONGbox 7.3 F350 and go that route. I have the extended cab shortbox and would kill to find a clean 7.3 like I described.

There is a reason that the 6.0 is an *orphan* engine no longer produced by Ford. Its run only lasted 3 1/2 years. I personally would not even consider one. Jury is still out on the 6.4 liter. OTOH, the 7.3 ran from 1994 to mid 2003 and has a proven track record...

Actually the 7.3 went longer than that. It was used as a non turbo for a while too.

I purchased these for a flip and I already have them. I'm planning on keeping one of them for now . I will probably keep the 06.

Yeah,

It's because the EPA changed the regs & the 7.3 couldn't meet them, and then the EPA changed them again & the 6.0 couldn't meet THEM. Now the 6.4 is due for retirement due to (you guessed it) new EPS regs for 2011.
