Patch,

Who does this "live tuning for a stronger tow haul"? What would it involve to have it done on my truck?

Joe

Let's see how long this link lasts..

Funny I even see an ad during yet another pause while I log in.

DP TUNER

They focuse on the 7.3 but did exactly what I needed for me.

If you can get the live tune session it is very pricey but worth it IMO..

There's four kinds of "tuning" for your truck. The tune is the computer program that's in your main computer (PCM).

1] Stock tune. The one Ford put in your truck.

2] Generic hot-rod tune. You can buy a chip or programmer with hot-rod tunes from several sources. SuperChips or Edge Proucts, for example.

3] Custom hot-rod tunes. Jody, the tuning genius at DP-Tuner.com, can build you a custom tune that will do exactly what you want it to do - given the limitations of your engine and tranny. Tell him what you want, and he'll mail you what you need to install it.

4] Live tuning by DP-Tuner. Similar to #3 above, but Jody plugs into your truck and tunes the PCM right there, customizing the tune to exactly match your exact truck, given all the other mods you have to your truck. You tell him what you want, then watch him do it. Even with identical options and mods, there are still slight differences in trucks. Live tuning matches your exact truck

But you have to go to wherever Jody is to do the live tuning. Normally that means a trip to his HQ in Hoschton, GA. But recently Jody and Diane attended a shindig in the Denver area, so folks in the Rocky Mountain west were able to take advantage of Jody's skills for a short time, without having to drive all the way to Georgia.

I have the BD Exhaust Brake on my 2006 F350 with the Automatic tranny.

I don't know how it compares to the custom tunes, but I do know it will slow my truck/trailer. My 4 horse LQ trailer weighs in at 16,000lbs loaded. I've come down 7-8% grade on I-70 in Utah's San Rafael Swell. ( 3 runaway truck escape ramps). With out the exhaust brake I am standing on my brakes a lot to stay under the 60 mph speed and be safe around the curves. With the Exhaust Brake I just turn it on, step on the brakes once to activate the Exhaust Brake and then just coast down the grade. Unless a car changed lanes or I over take a really slow moving vehicle, I won't touch my brakes again on that grade. The exhaust brake will hold me to a realistic speed for the 20 miles of down hill grade.

The down side is: With the Exhaust Brake turned on, it cancels out your cruise control. You can not use your cruise and the exhaust brake at the same time. Also you need to turn the Exhaust brake on almost daily. Get it to cycle a few times each day. If you don't use it daily, when you do turn it on the carbon build up will have frozen the valve in the open position. You can crawl under the truck and cycle the valve a few times with a large wrench. So it's easy to fix. But that doesn't help when you are coming down a grade and want the braking power and it doesn't work. The Exhaust Brake also does not work below 25 mph.

both of these problems would be avoided using the tuner solution. If the tuners can provide the same braking power.
