I will only be towing a pretty light 16ft box trailor for business, and a small boat trailer Its a 05 SD,was thinking of doing a 6 or 7 inch lift and 36 or 37 tires. Will the gearing play much of a role for light pulling like this?
what happens to your rpms at around 70 with these size tires.does it effect overdrive much with a pretty light trailer. I assume you can tow light trailers with overdrive on in a SD

Yes, you can tow up to about 6k in overdrive & hold about a 4% grade in a stock truck pretty easily.
Now I'm gonna put my flame suit on & get roasted: The only thing stupider than lifting a truck is lowering it. I can not for the life of me understand throwing money into a lift. Even for looks. To me it looks stupid, wastes money, puts undue strain on componets, shortens the life of the drive train & suspension, and harms resale value. Its your truck, but I guess I got other toys I'd rater spend my money on than my truck.
Must be nice to have lotsa money.

I always laugh when I see a lifted truck. Here in Wyoming, they are called "Tip Over Trucks". There's nothing like raising the center of gravity to make a truck handle better!

You guys make me laugh , These truck come from the factory LIFTED, 2" blocks under the rear for the F250 and 4" blocks under the rear for the F350, 4X4 of course.
So to go another inch or 2, whats the big deal????
Now to go 8"?!?!?!
I tow with the 4" blocks and front leveling kit with no problems, and would have no issue towing 5000 lbs or less with more lift and tire.

I don't see a problem, and I'm not going to flame you for doing what you want with your own truck , but I would consider a gear swap almost mandatory or you'll be pretty disappointed with the driveability of the truck after putting on the tall tires. If running tires that are 36-37" in actual diameter, I would go down to at least 4.30's if not 4.56's. I know the 4.30's are a mathematical push, but they do nothing to help make up for the increased rolling resistance/mass of the new tires & wheels. Personally I would (and did on a previous truck)go 4.56 and not look back.I know this is kind of a drag because it doubles the cost of what you want to do, but you'd be MUCH happier if you did.
Any of you guys have lift trucks? Any of you guys have 36" tires. PSD have all the power needed in a 5 speed auto to do both without gears, or tip over for center of gravity. As stated 350 are raised from factory, and some with 20" rims with 34" tires.
36" 3.73 1700rpm at 72mph 17-18mpg unloaded

I have a six inch lift and sometimes will tow around 6k. After adding the lift the suspension is alot stiffer and cornering is not an issue. It corners awesome...not at all like stock. I was worried about lifting it for that reason. But after the lift I would never go back...I feel like it is more stable after I lifted it. Of course the cg is raised but I added about 200 lbs for each tire and rim....about a 800 lbs total...that does bring your cg down a little... Weighs about 8k unloaded. I also have the stock gears and they do fine. The stock gears are great when not towing too! I get 16-17 mpg consitently unloaded! At 55 it is almost 1200 rpms and at 70...about 1800 rpms. I would keep your original gears....
Good luck,
Steven

thanks for the advise guys. its funny how guys with the same trucks have such different opinions of what they are capable of?
To answer some of the ?s though,my lift and tires are for long drives on the beach in deep sand, and attracting a little more attention to my personal business with a flashy truck and trailer. Im thinking a 6 inch lift would be pretty cool for that with some 37s
layson... your setup, lift tires and motor mods are pretty much what im planning on doing to this truck, send me some pics of your truck.Im not sure i wana use 22s though.I was thinking 18s or maybe 20s. I want to use the same toyo tire you have also, hoping to get a 14.50,in a 37. want a decent offset to put the wheels a tad out,so I can use some bushwacker fender flares, what offsets do you guys recommend,Im thinking a 12 inch rim to get a wider look.
everyone has their own opinions about what to do to their trucks. good thing we are all differnt or we'd all be driving around int he same looking truck!
personally i think a lifted truck with massive meats is pretty silly... it almost defeats the purpose of the truck b/c it makes loading and unloading harder and it puts a strain on the truck and trailer when towing. however to each their own. my obssession is with rock crawling and trail ridin so i know all about the lifted truck scene, however i also love having a beautiful looking tow pig that i can easily use as a truck!
through my experience you are going to notice a drop in fuel mileage and power if for nothing else but the extra weight of tires and wheels
its your truck man, do what you want! however my OPINION is that anything over 18's do not belong on a truck unless its a 22.5 tractor trailer wheel setup. and even then on some trucks it looks stupid.
I am running 35's right now with no lift and i think it looks and drives great. the only thing i'd do different would be a shackle reversal on the front for a lil bit smoother ride.

Quite true, but I hardly ever see any around here. By poster's sigs, the busier, higher populated, asphalt metropolitan area you live in, the higher you need to lift your truck. Gott'a get in and out of those mall parking lots don'cha know!
Hmm. Guess I need to lift my truck, seeing as I live just outside ATL and drive into town to work driving the truck maybe 2-3 times a week. Of course, I'd have to 'chop' the roofline to fit it in the parking garage ... I see a lifted truck at the local Dunkin' Donuts, a sharp looking 4x4 of which the owner is justifiably proud, but I can't for the life of me see how he can climb up into the thing. I'm 6-1, and would still need a step ladder ....
