How many rear leaf springs does your truck have?

I've got a '97 F350 that has three leaf springs in a pack sitting on one short flat spring & under an overload spring (see suspension album in my sig). Is this normal? I see a lot of other 1 ton trucks that have a five leaf spring pack. Just don't know if original owner removed a couple of spings to cushion ride. Is three enough for towing 14k 5th wheel? Thx

Re: How many rear leaf springs does your truck have?

I've got a shortened F550 spring stack, 5 leaves (which are much thicker than the 350 leaves) plus an overload spring.

Re: How many rear leaf springs does your truck have?

That sounds a bit light. My F250 has 4 on top of a short spring with no overloads. Call a spring shop and ask them what the norm is for a F350 in your year. You could also try calling Ford dealer and pricing out a new set of springs. They could probably tell you how many in the pack.

Re: How many rear leaf springs does your truck have?

I thought chassis cabs always had more springs because they are thinner.

Re: How many rear leaf springs does your truck have?

Cab and chassis have more because they are commercial trucks.

Re: How many rear leaf springs does your truck have?

I called a spring shop & he thinks it's not right either. The turck already rides rough so I'm not sure I want to add more leaves but I want it to be able to handle a load. Shop also said spring torsion shackles like velvet ride are worthless since they can't handle a load. That's not really what I read in this forum.

I called spring shop because I wanted to know if I had correct amount of springs. Also want to install new bushings, torsion shackle & maybe raise back an inch or two.

Re: How many rear leaf springs does your truck have?

I'm pretty sure a stock F350 SRW has 4 leaves, with one big flat one at the bottom. The DRW has 5 plus an overload spring

Re: How many rear leaf springs does your truck have?

4 leaves is probably normal for a SRW truck. Remember that you can order different spring packages so some may have more leaves.

Re: How many rear leaf springs does your truck have?

This is a stock rear spring. I have them on my 96 F250 and I have see the exact setup you described on an F350 SRW as well. Nevermind if it is "right" or not, how does it perform? I like the unloaded ride of mine, plan to add airbags for the big stuff.

If you go to a spring shop, have them show you the Dayton spring catalog pages for our trucks. There are about 20 possible springs. There are combinations of spring leaf thickness and number of leafs. This is one of the lightest ones, BUT, if it works why go heavier?

Re: How many rear leaf springs does your truck have?

Guess I'm just worried about capacity. Truck sags pretty low now so I had to add airbags. I think more leaves will just make ride stiffer which I don't need that's why I wanted to add "velvet ride" style rear shackles to ease ride. Suspension guys says they're garbage. I'll just have to take it in continue the research I guess.....

Ah, finally, your worried because of the ride height. 10 years old, with how much use? or abuse?

They (springs) are probably just worn out. Spring sag will compress and give an abnormal rough ride. Shackles won't help, just replace 'em.
