Re: How much grease should I put on the ball hitch

I threaded the top of my coupler and hooked up a grease gun to it permanently. I then attached the grease gun to the spring bars and every bump it puts in a shot of grease. We usually go through one grease cartridge every camping trip.

Use just enough to get real messy when you catch the ball with your pant leg.

I wonder how much grease ends up on the road? I bet on a rough road that it's better than bread crumbs.

You haven't lived till you lay into a curve in a gasoline tanker loaded with 9,000 galllons of 100 octane aviation gasoline and it won't straighten out without a heavy shudder and a snap. The shudder ended up being the front tires skidding on the road at 60mph and the snap was the quarter sized spot on the fifth wheel releasing it's grip on the trailer. The swerve on a two lane road was an eye opener too. When I finally found a place to drop the trailer I was amazed that the little shiny spot could cause the fifth wheel to lock to the trailer. Raking grease from the side of the hitch over the spot solved the problem.

Re: How much grease should I put on the ball hitch

pretty simple solution/ Gresase the hitch ball/ I didnt grease mine one time/ didnt have any and found the ball got pitted/ so I just put grease on it whatever you feel is enough and keep it greased when needed. Then when I unhitch I put a wallyworld plastic bag over it and take the hitch off and store it when not in use/ not once did I get any on my pants/ problem solved... Planned upgrades are a new and better turbo and larger exhaust pipes than the 21/2s that are already under the rig/ would like a 6 spd tranny but dont know if that is a feasable or smart investment yet.

That is serious pucker factor!

When we find a sharp corner with rough pavement we pull over just past the corner and video tape all the cars sliding from the grease. The kids love it.
