How much weight can we pull?

A friend of mine had a 1997 4 door long bed PSD with a in the bed ball hitch. He wants to make a 1200 mile round trip to pick up a non working Grunman step van and load it onto my 30FT. gooseneck trailer. What he is wondering is just how much weight his truck can pull? He looked in the manual and it said 10K pounds. From what I have read that is just for the underbody reese style hitches right? that 5th wheel hitches up your rating when you pull ? The grunman truck is roughly 6-7K pounds.

Re: How much weight can we pull?

I wouldn't think twice about it. The truck will handle it fine.

He'll know the weight is back there, but it should pull it.

With 4.10 rear axle, his GCWR is 20k. But with 3.55 rear axle his GCWR is only 16k.

With the 4.10 rear axle and stock size tires, that trip with that load will be a walk in the park. But if he has the 3.55 axle, or tall tires, then probably the truck will struggle, especially if there are any hills or mountains involved.

Re: How much weight can we pull?

" He looked in the manual and it said 10K pounds. "

I see that you're in NC. In MI this amount of weight is
a walk in the park. I tow a scaled 12.5K with no issues.
I see that you're in NC. If you stay in the Eastern part
you'll be OK. If you head into the mountains you're looking
for trouble. BTS told me with a little more power the 3.55
gears work fine with that amount of weight. If you were looking
for a truck, I'd suggest the 4.10 gears. If you already have
a 3.55 gear truck, more power and a trans upgrade might be in
order. I would also suggest loading the trailer and put it
on a set of truck scales. I was told that my boat/trailer
was "under 10K" by someone who owned one. The truck scales
proved that he was WAY off. I had already bought the truck
though. It works fine in MI. But, probably wouldn't in NC.

What is it that happens when you go to tall tires on a 4.10 rear end that causes the truck to struggle? Just trying to get smart.

Re: How much weight can we pull?

Everything on the truck is stock so stock tires...
not to sure of the rear end ratio though.

Re: How much weight can we pull?

The taller tires have the effect of lowering the ratio. A 4.10 with TALLER tires will move the ratio down to something under 4.10. That is why people that get the 3.55 ratio and then put the large tires on them have some trouble towing at max weight.

I have a 4.10 rear end and use one size shorter tires (still same width) raising my ratio to apox 4.18 to 4.20. I adjusted my tire size to move RPM band (2600 to 2800) that generated the best towing performance to match the road speed I wanted to run.

Re: How much weight can we pull?

Weight prolly won't be a problem, but remember that if this is like the typical Grumman bread truck it will have a LOT of frontal area. I think your friend will be cruising at 55 MPH or so with that sea anchor sitting on top of a big GN trailer.

No big deal since it's just a one time trip.

Re: How much weight can we pull?

Is your firend's truck an F250, F350 srw or F350 dually?

The GCWR is the same but with the 30' gooseneck trailer and the load you may overload the GVWR (8800 lbs on an F250, 9900 lbs on an F350 srw - on my 95, assuming 97 specs are the same) without a dually.

Figured it would be something like that. Did Ford make an F350 crew cab long bed SRW? If not, disregard my entire post. If so, disregard the first bit.

Either way, I stand corrected.

'97 F-250 HD CrewCab came only with a short bed.

'97 F-350 CrewCab SRW and DRW came only with a long bed.

'99-up is different.
