Drove round trip to a USEA horse trial near Metamora, MI this weekend. Drove up Friday dropping off the trailer and a load of horses and tack. Drove the truck home empty Friday night. Went up Sunday to pick them up and returned home without the weight of hay/shavings. 428 miles in all and averaged 13.9 mpg hand calculated. Hard to beat that towing 8000# truck, 10000# trailer and 4000-4500# horseflesh and assorted tack. Life is good even at $3.00 a gallon for fuel.

Pretty darn good for a 4x4 dually in 2wd. With half your mileage empty, 1/4 fully loaded, and 1/4 'sans hay,' that's a pretty good average. I'm sure conservative driving style helped, too. I got right at 13 uphill [Cheyenne to Rawlins] on I-80 in WY hauling approx. 8-8500 of trailer, tack, hay and 2 hayburners, cruising at 65 mph or so, in my 4x2 SRW. My guesstimate was closer to 10-11 going loaded & faster [72-78]; I get btwn 16-18 unloaded in mixed city/highway driving. That said, I do long for the days of $1.50 per gal or less diesel, what I was paying when I got the truck in early 2003 .....

Just got back from 800 mile round trip from Ann Arbor to Lexington, KY for the Kentucky Classic Horse Trials. Towing 23,000 #, hand calculated mileage was 12.2 mpg, which I consider great considering the the rolling hills. Mileage going down was 12.4 mpg. Mileage back (climbing out of the Ohio River valley) was 12. All in all, a great labor day weekend. Why is diesel in Ky so cheap ($2.7?/gallon)? Why is their unleaded regular $0.50 a gallon cheaper than MI (2.37/gallon)? One of the locals said they had never seen $3 a gallon fuel!

Probably a couple of reasons. One supply and demand, two state may have a hefty state income tax and they don't need as much tax revenue on gas. Ga. is that way.
I'm in a 'cheap diesel' state, GA, and paid 2.75 at the Flying J at I-75 exit 320 driving up to the South Fork of the Cumberland NRRA in TN this weekend. I then saw diesel for 2.63 at the Wal-mart at Dayton, TN on US 27 [scene of the Scopes monkey trial]. Filled up there on the way back today, and saw that the Flying J was down to 2.69 as I drove by. Hauling 2 horses in my sig trailer, I got just over 13 mpg on this mixed run, with speeds in the low 70s on I-75, much slower on the US highways. For some reason, TN diesel has been cheaper the last year or so than GA, which never seemed to be the case earlier .... I'm still impressed with the mileage Haulin' gets on his 4wd dually - not too much less than my 2wd SRW hauling much less weight.

Update: I just returned from a round trip to Lexington, KY. Ambient temps were 80+ and the AC was on. Towing a 24K# trailer loaded with three horses, hay, shavings, tack and the kitchen sink. I was hoping the new mods would improve my fuel mileage. Mods include: DP-Tuner chip run in 80economy mode, programs optimized for BTS dual HPOP, BTS tranny, DDP AC singles, H2e turbo, Spearco 6.0 intercooler, 3.5" downpipe to 4" exhaust. Big oil, singles and the 80e are supposed to increase mileage and the H2e and Spearco and exhaust are to keep the EGTs in check.
Mileage into a stiff headwind travelling South was 8.8 mpg. Mileage returning was 11.3 mpg with tailwind. Combined average was 10.3. The truck pulled the load well and the power was fine but not necessary to pull the load at 65 mph/2000 rpms. EGTs were in check peaking at 1270° while climbing out of the Ohio river valley travelling South. Had to start from a dead stop midway up the hill due to traffic and it got hot until the turbo spooled. Tranny was awesome. It was a great trip but it will be a looooooooooooooooong time before my mileage pays off those mods. LOL. I managed fine with AIS, stock exhaust back with BTM and Jody's 40 Tow program.
