Is it illegal to have a hitch installed in your receiver if you're not towing in NJ?

I live in NJ and have heard this before but I've never been able to confirm this in an official way.

Any ideas?

Re: Is it illegal to have a hitch installed in your receiver if you're not towing in NJ?

When my wheel bearing on my trailer went out I left my trailer in a parking lot in jersey city(prolly a bad idea but it was there when I got back) and I had my receiver on and nobody said anything. Keep in mind of where I was at and cops there could care less about pittly things like that. Your best bet is to call the local police dept. and ask them about it.

Re: Is it illegal to have a hitch installed in your receiver if you're not towing in NJ?

I never had a problem with leaving hitch mounted. But you know Jersey there's probibly a law to screw you somewhere. My friends hitch rusted solid in his reciever - Was a ***** to get out. Other friend was rear ended while hitch was mounted. Cops came gave other driver ticket - following too close - No ticket for him and the hitch realy messed the other car up.

I'm not from Jersey, but I always leave mine in when we disconnect our TT at the camp ground. I feel sorry for the person that hits it.

Re: Is it illegal to have a hitch installed in your receiver if you're not towing in NJ?

I never heard of a law like that but I keep mine stored in the truck so that no one steals it. If they did that it would cost me about $300 to replace and I did not pay for it in the first place. A friend bought my entire setup for me to help him move.

Re: Is it illegal to have a hitch installed in your receiver if you're not towing in NJ?

Most states have some sort of law/regulation about how far behind the rear bumper a 'load' can extend w/o having lights/flags/etc on it. This would be the only problem that I could think of. I leave mine in all the time, locked so it has to be cut to get it off. Never had a problem.

Re: Is it illegal to have a hitch installed in your receiver if you're not towing in NJ?

Thats the only time I really leave it in too. Getting a ticket for it would put a damper on the vacaton thou.

And like you I feel bad for the person who hits it.

Re: Is it illegal to have a hitch installed in your receiver if you're not towing in NJ?

This is for the guys that "feel sorry for the guy that hits it" - Are you talking about someone rear ending you and sticking it through their grill or someone walking around the truck and hitting their shin (who would more than likely be the owner)?

If concerned just tie a red grease rag around it. That's what log trucks do when the logs stick out past the rear of the trailer.

Re: Is it illegal to have a hitch installed in your receiver if you're not towing in NJ?

I had some rear end me once when I had my hitch in. Stupid fool was driving a rental car. Punched out the radiator. What was funny was that he wanted nothing to do with Law Enforcement because he was going to be late for his plane. So, I had no damage, and the poor little rental Cavalier had a HUGE hole in the radiator. He drove off to the airport, and I never heard another word about it. I would love to know hoe explained it to the rental company.

Re: Is it illegal to have a hitch installed in your receiver if you're not towing in NJ?

Just for pure self-defense, I often put my hitch IN when traveling - just in case I get creamed from behind. I, personally, would rather have THEM reap their own rewards for being such an idiot driver!! (I LIKE my truck decorated just as it IS! )

Re: Is it illegal to have a hitch installed in your receiver if you're not towing in NJ?

I leave my pintle hook in all the time. Especially useful when parked in Boston. People ther park by braille(sp). Saves my rear bumper from getting dinged.

When my new front end replacement arrives (www.southtexasoutfitters.com), I plan on leaving some kind of hitch in the front receiver also. Why should my bumper get scratched?

Re: Is it illegal to have a hitch installed in your receiver if you're not towing in NJ?

My brother got pulled over for speeding. As he was watching the trooper walk behind his truck, the trooper suddenly doubled over. YES he hit the hitch. My brother said it was almost impossible not to be laughing when he finally straightened up and got to the window.
