Dose anybody know a good and fair place to get a steel flat bed for a '96 F-350 (regular wheel base taking off old factory bed) in Indiana (around Bloomington) not afraid to drive a little. up around franklin theres a place that sells them but they want $1,400 for one with the goose neck ball pocket. you used to be able to buy aluminum ones for that price. was thinking id build one cheeper than that in my garage.

One of the car/truck/equipment trader rags available free at the grocery stores has an ad for Reeds Trailer Sales outside of Cincinnati (north of Hillsboro) that advertises steel flatbeds from $899.00. I was thinking of one for my F250 when someone sideswiped me at the Flying J fuel island until I found a perfect used bed for $750.00.

'95 F250 ext cab long bed, PSD, 5 speed manual, two wheel drive, 3.55 gears, LUK clutch conversion, 450 lb homemade REAR BUMPER, homemade open element AIR FILTER, aluminum bed cap. With me in the cab (285#) and full of fuel weighs 6,580 lbs (steer 3420 drive 3160)
The price of steel has gone through the roof and so everything is priced higher to cover the cost. Building one in your garage could actually cost you more than buying a similar bed from a manufacturer.
Aluminum will set you back and arm and a leg.

I'm going to get a flatbed for my truck from them in the spring.
I'll bet that if you add the value of your time (dont use min wage - use a decent welder's wage - say $22.00 hr?)
to build the flatbed you will not save very much on a DIY project. Build it yourself because you WANT to not to save money. [end of my .02]
Remember - the cost of everything tracks the cost of fuel. Everybody has to make enough money to live.

Exactly. I kicked around the idea of building my own for a while. The best price on new steel beds around here is about $1200, and about $900 for a custom made bed with a wood deck. Aluminum, well I could have gotten one at a "Clearance" price for $2200, which I found to be a decent price for all aluminum.
I was fortunate to find a beat-up used all steel bed for $500 that I jumped on. Sandblasted and painted (for free, good to have connections) and it looks like a brand new bed at a fraction of the cost.
