It's time to replace tires on fifth wheel. What do you recommend?

Hello,

The 5'ver is a 29' Titanium (24E29) with 15" Goodyear Marathons load range "C" and aluminum alloy wheels.

I want to change to 15" LR "D". Any recommendations that have worked well for you? Marathons get mixed reviews, but I've had excellent luck with them.

Thanks

Dave Holl

I put Denman 15" load range E tires on my 5er. Thus far, I really like them and they seem to get pretty good reviews.

Teamroper,

I don't think my wheels are rated for "E" tire pressures. Seems to me 60 psi is max.

What pressure do you run in your Denman tires?

Who makes Denman tires?

Thanks

Sounds like you're in the same boat I was. The new trailer came with not quite enough tire on wheels that are too narrow for bigger tires. ST205/75R15C on 5.5" wheels.

After I blew out 3 of the stock Marathons, I decided to upgrade tires. At the time nobody made an ST205/75R15D. So I upgraded wheels as well as tires and went to Cooper ST225/75R15D on 6" wide wheels.

After too many miles on the Coopers, they started coming apart so I replaced then with ST225/75R15E Denman Express ST radial. No more tire problems.

Wheels are available from www.southwestwheel.com for less than $50 per wheel. My Denmans cost almost $100 each.

If you don't want to upgrade wheels yet, Denman now makes an ST205/75R15D radial. Max PSI is 65, but if your wheels won't handle more than 60, then those tires with 60 PSI will carry a lot more weight than the stock tires
@ 50 PSI. http://www.denmantire.com/catalog/Trailer.pdf

I'm looking at the Green Ball ST 225/75/R15/E 1B, speed rated for up to 106 mph. I guess I'll have to look at the Denmans too. Any body know the speed rating on the Denmans????

Like you, I've had good results with the Goodyear Marathons. My 32' Jayco has 225/75R15 Load Range "D". I run them at 65 PSI (max pressure).

4-5000 miles a year over that last 4 years without problem. I'd do them again. Not to say there isn't something better.

Re: It's time to replace tires on fifth wheel. What do you recommend?

After chewing up tires on a regular basis, I switched from 'D' 'any brand' to "E" rated Denman tires on my 5'ver. Nary a problem since. I've put a second set of Denman's, after 30k miles or so, on my trailer. Alaska and back on Denmans and no blowouts. My Bro-in-law went with us to Alaska and lost several tires before we got to Anchorage. He ordered a set of Denmans in Anchorage and hasn't lost a tire since. We both now travel with a "E" Denman spare and another Denman "E" unmounted spare... just in case.

Goin to Washington and Oregon in 2008 and going back to Alaska on my current set of Denmans in 2009. Hope to buy Gooch a beer and shoot the breeze when we get up there.

Ain't nothin' but Denmans going on my trailer, ever, unless they move production to China.

Nope. Take a look at my sig. Mine came with 15" D rated if you can believe it. Pretty big issues with a lot of the heavier trailers out there. Carlisle stands to loose a LOT of $$ due to inadequate tires on heavy trailers.

I'm working with them as we speak for 7 replacements after 5,000 km.

Hey Newbie, I have the exact same trailer as you. I just had three blowouts on a trip a trip from Portland to Glamis and back. Two on the way down and one on the way back. Everytime was a violent blowout doing massive damage to my trailer. The fenders on both sides were blown off along with big pieces of the aluminum siding. Also the propane supply line for the fridge and the stove was blown off.
I have probably 5000 miles on the trailer.
