Know anything about Dump Trailers???

Not sure if there is a forum for this but thought some of you all may have some experience.

I am looking at buying a 7x14 dump trailer (bumper pull). Probably new since I can't seem to find a used one anywhere. I have looked at several trailers on ebay and some locally.

Here is what I am trying to figure out. Some units have two hydraulic lift cylinders (one one each side) on the underside of the box. There are other units that have the "scissor" lift. This is all located on the underside but is centrally located with one big looking hydraulic ram. Is one of these better that the other? Both trailers are rated 14000# but the dual cylinder set up is $1,500 less than the scissor set up ($4500 vs. $6000). Any thoughts??? I would obviously rather spend $4500 but not if I would be disappointed in it later.

thanks for any input.

Shane

Re: Know anything about Dump Trailers???

FallGuy, I have a 14' Carson bumper pull with the scissor lift. The trailers I have looked at, the scissor will lift higher, which means you can dump those sticky loads. My vote is for the scissor.

Good luck,

Dave

Re: Know anything about Dump Trailers???

Scissor lifts will lift higher and lift more of a load. I have seen some poorly designed dump trailers before. Location and angle of cylinders make a big difference. Make sure you buy from a company with a good track record.

Good Luck,
Brian Moore

Re: Know anything about Dump Trailers???

I just ordered a cam superline trailer dump so i have been looking into this stuff lately. From what i have learned the less expensive trailers have the scissor lift and the more expensive ones have the dual pistons that telescope. Brimar and CAM SUPERLINE make a very similar trailer. My question is how did you get that trailer for 4500 bucks? My trailer will be considerably more. I bought a cam superline 6x12 heavy duty low profile. Is this a deck over light duty? Either way, i spoke with a large dealer who has all types and he said the scissor is a cheaper set up, not worse, but cheaper. He stated that for heavy loads, the dual setup is great incase you are not balanced. A single piston could result in twisting. Let me know what you are getting. Thanks

Re: Know anything about Dump Trailers???

Thanks for all the input. I found the ad in Heavy Equipment Trader(www.traderonline.com). The trailer that caught my eye is a Bray Trailer. I can't seem to locate the ad via their website. They must use the same search engine as TDS! So here is what the ad says:

2005 New 7x14 Hydraulic Dump Trailer. T-7000lb axles (two axles)w/elec brakes, new 16"HD 12 ply tires on 8-lug whls, 82"Wx14 inside bed w/24"H side walls, 1/8" steel plate floors/side walls, heavy 6" tubing mainframe, hyd are power up and power down elec motor powering twin 3.5"x36" rams for max dumping cap and dump angle 47 deg, split rear tailgate setup, much more, $4495.00, now looking for dealers nationwide, 352-472-7787, Bray Trailers.

The Scissor setup was a ABU Tailer. The only real difference is 7gage steel floor and a Tri-swing gate. It is also a 47 deg. lift. $6895.00 --- Now $6595.00

Re: Know anything about Dump Trailers???

The scissor lift is by the better of the two set ups. With a dual piston set up if your load is unbalanced it forces the opposite cylinder to work harder creating more stress on it. The guy that dumped a load of concrete for me wishes he had the scissor lift. He had a bri-mar with dual cylinders and when he dumped the 10,000 pound load that wasn't even, the one cylinder had to work harder and pushed a hole right through the steel floor! I have heard of this happening on other occasions as well. It is cheaper to buy the scissor lift and works a whole lot better because it balances the load using the scissors.
