leaf spring play

I have the axles off of my 27 ft travel trailer and have a lot of "slop" in side to side play- maybe 2" at the center of the spring. Some play is at the shackles, then more at the center "rocker" and at the plates that drop the springs down about 3".
When the axles are installed the play will be greatly reduced.
Question: how much play is acceptable when the springs are hanging free of the axle?

Re: leaf spring play

I just rebuilt the suspension on my 26ft fiver. I had almost the same "slop" on mine. I got a kit for this outfit:
http://shop.easternmarine.com/index....categoryID=181
They have the best price.

The kit is from Dexter and has shackles that are 3/8 inch thick, zirk fitting on all pivot points, new bolts, and bronze spring bushings.

Most of the "slop" came from PLASTIC spring bushings. Yes they were original stock from Dexter. Probably orignially good plastic, but after 10 years they were trashed.

The fiver now tows wonderfully.
