Looking for Toy Hauler with 5000lbs cargo capacity
Hi Everyone,
We had decided to sell our truck camper and look for a toy hauler. My toy is a 71 FJ40 Land Cruiser that weight around 4200. My challenge is ones I have found will not handle my FJ40 in the cargo area because of weight.
Re: Looking for Toy Hauler with 5000lbs cargo capacity
Yeah, the bigger WeekendWarrior 5ers, and one of their tag trailers, the FB3000, have a payload of 6,000 pounds. So if you're careful of what else you haul, it should be able to handle a 4,200-pound rock crawler or sand blaster.
The FB3000 tag and the LE3505 5er both have at least 20' cargo length, so I hope that jeep is less than 20' long bumper to bumper. If it's less than 18.5' long, then it might fit in the LE3305 which has 18.5' cargo bay.
But that 6,000 pounds includes all fresh water, and gasoline, and sewage and greywater holding tanks, and food, and clothing, and dishes, and cookware, and anything else you might want to haul, so it's still very easy to overload a toy hauler that has 6,000 pounds payload. Plan to travel with empty holding tanks, almost-empty fresh-water tank, and almost empty trailer gasoline tank. Yes, gas tank. the Weekend Warrior toy haulers have an optional 20-gallon or 40-gallon gas tank for hauling gas for the toy(s). And the fresh-water tank holds 150 gallons! But it's sorta silly to haul an extra 1,000 pounds worth of fresh water when on the road.
Fill up with water and gas when you get close to where you're going, and use it up or dump it before you head home.

Just make sure the ramp will handle the weight.

The Weekend Warriors with 6,000 pounds payload have:
[ QUOTE ]
"Super" Heavy Duly Ramp rated 3000 Ibs per axle, & Braced Floor
[/ QUOTE ]
Assuming they meant "heavy duty" instead of "heavy duly", then that should be more than enough for a 4,200-pound jeep. (Only one axle is on the ramp at one time, unless that is an extremely-short-wheelbase jeep with less than 84" wheelbase.)

If the Weekend Warrior doesn't seem to be your cup of tea, then put on your thinking cap. What do the big boys do? Instead of an RV with room to haul a vehicle, they have a vehicle hauler with room for living. It's called a "race trailer" with living quarters (LQ). Several folks make them, including Pace American.
Order the Shadow race trailer with Daytona pkg and LQ, generator prep, and AC (heat pump) options, and that should be what you're looking for. You can choose 5er, gooseneck, or tag trailer types, but the 5er is probably the most popular for a pro race trailer. With the generator prep pkg, you can always add an Onan motorhome generator later if you camp in the sticks where electricity is often not available. And in your neck of the woods, you'll want an AC that works at least 6 months of the year.
Another option might be a wide-body LQ 4-horse trailer, with the stalls removed to to haul your off-roader instead of 4 horses. But I don't know if anybody makes one wide enough to get your toy in. Perhaps you could add a ramp over the wheelwells for the front tires? I do know that some of the high-end LQ horse trailers around here sell for over $100,000 Texas dollars, so they're plenty nice enough for camping out in the sticks - with or without horses. IFlyLTA, could you please send me his email. Never hurts to talk to someone that has been through this.
Thanks for the link. It all comes down to price. I am even throwing around the idea of getting a lowboy 2 car hauler and putting a travel trailer in the first slot. They only weigh 2500lbs (empty). Much lighter than an average car. I can do that for a little over $20k.

Not quite right on the cargo measurements.
The LE3505 has 16'11" to the first cabinet before you go into the kitchen. The 20' is all the way to the steps, not useable for big toys.
I ordered a LE3505 and added 4' so now I have 20'11" to the first cabinet.
My buggy is 16' long and I wanted more cargo space without having to put toys in the kitchen.
The LE3305 and LE3105 are even less.
I do agree about the cargo capacitys. My LE3905 is 11,600lbs completely dry.
CAT scale said with my 2000lb buggy, full water, full fuel, full propane, gear and food for 5 days with my 800lb golf cart inside, I was 15,960lbs going down the road (including pin weight).
A 4000lb jeep will overload the trailer by quite a bit if you want to haul with full water etc.
For maximum cargo capacity, get an Aluminum sided trailer.

Re: Looking for Toy Hauler with 5000lbs cargo capacity
If you want a way overpriced toyhauler built by illegal alien day-laborers managed by a bunch of moto-freaks then Weekend Warrior is a good choice. If you don't believe that statement go over to the factory in Perris, CA and see for yourself. I've owned a WW for 3 years now and have seen, heard of, and felt the pain of dealing with them.
If I had to do it over again I'd buy a trailer made somewhere like Indiana or for about the same money as a truck/trailer I'd look for a deal on a diesel pusher with an inclosed trailer....that's the way to roll! My neighbor has a Vintage 48' race trailer with living quarters in the front, very nice setup (pulls with an 01 SD dually) and it's built like a rock....all metal construction.

I don't consider myself a "big boy" (except for maybe waist size) but Smokey has it right on.
I've got a 32' Britton/Transport Designs I bought used, with nothing more than a winch. But it has twin Dexter 8K axles w/ 16" 8-lug wheels, grosses at 12K, and about 26' of useful floor that is fully braced at 18" centers. The remaining 6' or so is a perfect "shelf" area for a double bed mattress.
Since I bought it I've added cabinets (Home depot), a TV/DVD/VCR, microwave, small fridge, Coleman A/C, 3 deep cycle batteries, 5000W inverter, Statpower charger, Honda 3000eu generator, tool box, countertops, small "bar" sink with a stainless postmix softdrink canister filled with clean water and powered by compressed air, shelves, storage, a tire rack, 120V lighting, and a host of other stuff that never seems to let me say "it's done." Solar panel, and a DIY combination shower/toilet are next.
I probably have $20K inversted by now, and it's taken a long time. But it's still a far cry from what a new WW toyhauler costs that's even similar, and with far more capacity and strength. Even new racecar trailers (Pace, Wells Cargo) are made much cheaper than they used to be, albiet with some weight savings. But the axles and tires are marginal IMO at the rated cargo capacities.
I guess it depends on what you want to do. If you're like me, the point is hauling the toy, with the ability to boondock as an added bonus. It makes sense to start with a vehicle hauler and add LQ. If you intend to spend a lot of time in the trailer, but would also like to bring a vehicle toy once in a while, then maybe a true "toyhauler" with all the LQ bells and whistles would serve you better.
If you decide to live in a cargo trailer, make sure you order the side door with the ability to open it from the inside...
