The answer for part of this discussion is 20,000# GCVWR (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating). If your truck loaded is max 7500# then you could tow 12500# behind the truck so long as the weight on the hitch plus the weight of the truck does not exceed the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). So If your truck has a GVWR of 9500#, you could have an additional 2000# on the pin and still be within the GVWR and the GCVWR. Since most tag trailers only have 10% of the total weight on the hitch, you could pull that full 12500# if it was a TT. However most gn trailers have 20% of their weight on the hitch so you would be limited to about 10,000# trailer to be within the GVWR. Now the GVWR and the GCVWR are not legal limits so you can pull more than that however you do so at increased risk to the motoring public as well as expose yourself to increased liability in a civil suit that may result from any accident you are involved in.

To a certain extent all of those numbers are approximations. For instance my horse trailer, fully loaded with 5 horses and tack for a show puts nearly 30% of it's weight on my DRW rear axle. I am still within the axle weight limits but just barely. I am no longer so generous about hauling other folks tack in my extra large tack room in the front of the trailer. Is that the GVWR of the GN trailer or is 14K what it scales? Personally, I would not want to tow that much without a DRW truck.

So it would depend on the weight of the trailer and rock crawler. Also you may be able to position the rock crawler more over the axles so there is less than 20% on the pin but do not go too far or it will tow poorly.

In most of country they don't use manufacture warrenty info to make laws.
My 3/4 ton has pulled over 24k cargo plus trailer many times safely over country. (prior owner hauled in USA and Canada) He voided warrenty long ago.
I did check with my insurance and DOT and both assured me I am legal.
BTW IMO the driver,his attention to conditions,others is more important then load.
I tow 2 rockcrawling rigs with my 2004 F-350 on a 30ft. deckover gooseneck with no problems what so ever. We tow a back halfed Toyota Landcruiser on 42" IROKs and a cherokee on 39.5" IROKs. I know it's 2 different trucks, but hope this helps. Be sure to get brakes on both axles.
in texas it is only limited to the manufactures rating of the vehicle. my 2000 f350 was rated and registered to 11,200 (that was the max on truck). my 2001 f550 is rated and registered to 17,500 (that is max on truck). my 40 ft gn is rated at 24k. so with my gn and f550 i am registered and legal to haul a total of truck trailer and load weight at 41,500 pounds. as far as texas is concerned if you are registered for it and you want to tow it with whatever truck you can. i found it hard to stay under 11.2k when loading my gn so i moved up to have more capacity under the pin. now i have as much as 8k pounds of toungue weight. think about that as that is more than most people tow complete. now when you get to those weights you have to have cdl, commercial everything, proper insurance, log book, and on and on just like the big 18 wheeler trucks. hope that helps but only for texas as every state is different.
