Maximum tow width?

I built a shop that is 12x16 with 8 foot walls and a total height of about 12 feet to the ridge at my old house, on floor joists so It could be moved. I want to move it my new house, Which is about 30 miles away, with major highway all but maybe the last 1/2 mile. I live in Wilmington NC Any one know what I need to do to tow this thing over here? thanks!

Re: Maximum tow width?

I would vote for having it done. Overwidth and (possibly)overheight permits will be needed as well as expertise in moving a building. At 12 feet wide you may need escort car or cars as well. When you get it on a tralier (unless you have a low trailer) you will be over 13'6" tall.

Re: Maximum tow width?

Jack it up.
Put some wheels under it.
Put some kind of draw bar on it.
Get permit.
Go.
Now... If you don't know what you are doing, get some professional help. It really isn't much of a job *IF* you can keep it below 13'6" high. Unless the overhang makes you over 12'wide in N.C. you won't need escorts. One would probably be a good idea though IF you do it yourself.

Re: Maximum tow width?

Hi John,

The first thing I would do is call the DOT and ask what are the permit requirments and what roads you will need to travel on and the travel times you are allowed to move it. Besure to ask about moving at 3am on Sundays as that would be your lowest traffic time. Most of the time it's sun up to sun down and 10am to 2pm in major citys.

I would then go drive that route to see what it would be like at 30mph and with one side of the building hugging the center white line as some roadways are only 14ft of pavement.

If that all looks good then I agree, buy some used MH axles and make a small sub frame to attach to the building so your under 13ft-6". Don't forget to temperory cross brace the inside of the building before moving.

AZ didn't require pilot car for my load but if I was going to use my single pilot car, Co required a single pilot car, then I needed two pilot cars in AZ as two pilots cars was the minimum AZ requirment at that time for the roadway AZDOT wanted me to use.

Also you will need 13ft wide mirrors for a 12ft wide load. A piece of 1-1/2" thinwall square tube steel works good for the temp bracket. Mirrors doesn't count in considering overall load width.

Buy UNION work UNION. It pays off in the long run
Define Union:
A labor Union is nothing more than united workers with a common goal for better working conditions.

We all are in some sort of labor Union, some are just larger than others with better working conditions!
