Michelin Tire Question .....

Checked the Michelin tire WEBsite looking for a "load range G" tire for a 16 inch rim/wheel for my 5'er trailer. Could not find one. Either I'm missing something or Michelin doesn't make one. Am I wrong ??? What other "G" tire can I use ???

Re: Michelin Tire Question .....

Been looking for tires myself but in an "E" load range. You're right. "G"load range is a little rare.

You might take a look at the Goodyear G614RST. It's available in a "G" and has been recommended by Goodyear specifically for trailer use. Don't know anything about how they wear so, if you decide that this could work for you, you might want to post a note and ask for some feedback from the guys and gals on the forum. Note that the only size available appears to be LT235/85R16.

Good luck.

"tomjac" ...

Yes, the Goodyear "G" tire that you mentioned is the one that Carriage puts on their 5er's. I was hoping I could get a Michelin instead.

Michelin has a XPS "Rib" tire and a XPS "Traction" tire .. both in a load range "E" which you can check out at MICHELIN
Regards.

Re: Michelin Tire Question .....

I spent a lot of time researching this and it was determined exactly what you have learned - Michelin does not make a load range G tire in a 16 inch size.

My research concluded that I had a choice of one - Goodyear. I was not interested in a Goodyear timer due to a number of really crappy experiences with the Goodyear 159's. I talked to Goodyear, they refused to admit they had a problem with the G159's. I know personally of several individuals who had blowouts that did big dollar damage to their 5th wheels. I came to the conclusion that Goodyear did not want my business.

Based on the above I chose Michelin XPS's (and I was within the weights allowed for load range E tires) and I am happy with my choice.

I believe Goodyear knows they have a lock on this market and are perfectly willing to take advantage of this situation.

"02F350" and "beertym" ....

Thanks for your info. Carriage puts the Goodyear "G614 RST" 235/85R-16G tire as an option on their 5'er. Anyone know of any specific problems with this tire ?? Can I hope they got everything right when they designed it.

Re: Michelin Tire Question .....

My Alfa came with the G159 tires. After one blew out Goodyear replaced it and paid for the $1200 damage with no questions. After another one blew they paid for damage once again and replaced all the tires with G614's at no cost. So far (2 years) the G614's have had no problems in about 15K miles. Goodyear was very fair with me.

Re: Michelin Tire Question .....

"G" rated tires are what semi's use.... Probably something like 120 psi. I seriously doubt a trailers wheels are rated for that pressure, or for the load that would need 120 psi....

Re: Michelin Tire Question .....

"Mr Roboto" ...

The Goodyear "G614 RST" 235/85R-16G are rated 3750 @ 110 PSI max when use as a single tire .. in a "dual" or "tandem" application the weight rating is somewhat less. When you upgrade to the "G" tires you must also upgrade the rim/wheels.

Re: Michelin Tire Question .....

I have not heard of any problems, but I do not know of many people with the G614's. Like I said, I switched to the Michelin XPS's, but I could get by with the weights on an E rated tire.

I have heard of very inconsistent support on the G159's by Goodyear. In my case they wouldn't do anything, at least before before the damn things tore up my trailer. I did not chose to go through that and paid my precious dollars to fix Goodyear's problem.

And as a result I will probably never be a Goodyear customer again. If Goodyear doesn't care about me, I don't care about Goodyear.
