my marker lights don't work, everything else does

I wired the trailer up a few months ago and everything was fine. I had turn signals, brakes, markers and so on.

Today, I hook up the trailer after about a month and I have no marker lights on the trailer. Everything else works.

I got a tester and I have no power at the marker light wire from the truck just before it goes into the plug. This tells me that the problem is with the truck. The truck itself has all the parking/marker lights but no power to the trailer plug. I have not messed with anything on my truck at all. I have no blown fuses and the wire seems to be spliced in well. Is there a relay or something?

Any suggestions?

The Marker lights are not separate wires from the running lights. If you have tail lights on the trailer, you have power from the truck, The problem is in the trailer somwhere, all they need is 12v and a good ground. Start checking voltages, and ohming for ground.

I agree.. If you have tail lights, you should have marker lights. There is no seperate wire for them. Now, if you don't have tail lights, then perhaps you do have an issue on the truck, but otherwise, it has to be in the trailer somewhere......

Re: my marker lights don't work, everything else does

You didn't state the trucks year model, but the newer trucks have a fuse for the trailers running lights that is seperate from the truck running lights. The idea is that a problem with the trailer doesn't wipe out the lights on the tow vehicle. You should have two fuse panels in the truck. One under the instrument panel and another under the hood. Check again and I think you'll find a blown fuse. If it happens again, look into the trailer wiring for a chafed/shorted wire in said circuit.

Re: my marker lights don't work, everything else does

When I said marker lights I was meaning parking lights. The only tail lights on the trailer I had were signals and brakes but no marker/parking lights.

PerryB, I failed to mention the year of my truck because all I have posted under has been the forums for the year of it. It is a 1996. It turns out that it has a distribution box in the engine bay with a blown fuse that goes to the trailer lights. Good call. Thanks. Now I have to find the short.

I recently rewired the trailer and I bet while I was running the wire I caught an edge that tore the insulation as I was pulling. It should be easy to find. Thanks for your replies.

Re: my marker lights don't work, everything else does

Your very welcome! The easiest way to find a short is to ohm the wires to ground, IMHO... Good luck!
