Need Help Getting Trailer from Michigan to California

Anyone have any recomendations of company's that will do this? Cost per mile? It's an Airstream and I would just go and get it, but it would cost me too many days off work.

Might want to check with your local camper/rv dealer. They can probably give you some good recommendations.

Re: Need Help Getting Trailer from Michigan to California

Come up with any prices yet on shipping it? Also, where is it in Michigan, and what are the specs on the trailor? Bumper pull, 5th wheel... My wheels were just turning. I'm on christmas break from college and could be up for a road trip. We can see what the prices for shipping it were and maybe make a cheaper deal depending on how soon you need it and such. Let me know. Like I said, my wheels started to spin a little, and it was a thought.

Re: Need Help Getting Trailer from Michigan to California

My best qoute is $1.50 a mile one way, with no return charge.

It's 2440 miles door to door. So that's $3660.

I am toying with a road trip of my own, since fuel will probably be about $1750 round trip for me. Add motel and food for a 5 day turnaround trip and I am still only about $2250 - a significant savings. Just don't know when I will get 5 days off work.

The trailer is a 31 foot 1972 Airstream Sovereign bumper pull. Weighs aprox 6000 lbs and will have the tires/brakes/axles/wiring inspected prior to leaving Michigan.

It's in National City, Michigan and needs to go to Irvine, CA.

I don't have any deadlines as to when I need it by.

Thanks!!

Re: Need Help Getting Trailer from Michigan to California

What kind of mileage are you figuring? Round trip I'm thinking I'll go through 400 gallons or so, with some number guessing of:

2440 miles @ 10 mpg = 244 gallons (loaded)
2440 miles @ 17 mpg = 144 gallons (unloaded)
that equals 388, so i made it 400 gallons for an even number. Fuel averages between 2.50 and 3.00 a gallon, $1000 to $1200 fuel.

Add your food/hotel costs of $500. Anywhere between $1500 and $1700. I could really care less and running up miles, maybe add maintenance costs of an oil change. Then some $ to compensate for the time, but I'm not looking to make a killing. If I get the time, I can do it if you don't want to take off work. I can get off work easy since its a family owned business, we have plenty of employees and no classes right now means everyone wants hours. If not, the first week of March is Spring Break and we have a week off too. See how much it'll cost to take a week off work and lose a week of pay compared to not. I'm just looking at ways to make a few extra bucks, go on a road trip, and help someone out at the same time.

Re: Need Help Getting Trailer from Michigan to California

I'm really guessing here, but if you're not in a hurry, could you get it into a container and have it delivered by rail? I know a train uses a lot less fuel & labor to move a ton of freight than a truck but I don't have a clue how that translates into rates, particulatly for less-than-carload freight.

Too bad you're not going the other direction. There's got to be a pretty fair number of empty AutoLoaders heading back.

Know anybody there about to buy a new F-150? Take delivery at the plant here (River Rouge) and drive the both of them back?

You only need to add the hotel cost one way. Sleep in the Airstream on the way back.
