My son's boy scout troop has recuited me to locate/acquire a suitable cargo trailer to haul troop camping gear. (This post is Ford-diesel related because the trailer will usually be towed with my F250 6.9 diesel.)
Does anyone have (or know where I can find) a list of cargo trailer manufacturers located in Southern California? I know of Carson, Mighty Mover, Az-Tek and Callen Camper, but I am sure there are others. Cost is an object, so I want to start with manufacturers nearby to avoid shipping costs from the midwest where it seems the majority of mfrs are located.
Thanks,

If you want the most cargo trailer for the money, then you probably want a Pace American. A Pace might cost you more, but it's because it's more trailer, not the freight charge from Utah.

I special-ordered it new and plan to drive it until it quits.
I recently purchased a 20ft. V nose Az-Tex. I looked at Pace American and thought the Az-Tex was a better buy. Now that I have it home and have had problems dealing with Az-Tex, I have my doubts. If you order a trailer from anybody be sure you list and have them quote exactly what you want. Do not assume that they know what you need, or even care. Avoid Az-Tex unless you are absolutely sure that they have what you want at the best price. If at all possible try to buy one off of the lot so that you can see exactly what it has in the way of brakes, tie downs, break away switch, etc. Bob

I own a pace for my race car and love it, well built and IMHO worth the extra value. That being said here's a few thoughts.
I think if I were looking for one for a Boy scouts group I would contact Home Depot of all places who carry Wells Cargo in stock now at most of there stores and I suspect you might be able to get one donatated or at very least a heck of a deal .
Note I would not call the H D direct I would head up the food chain and call corporate and tell them Tony Stewart told you to call or some such. Bet you could work something out. HD is big on image and donating to worthwile commiuty causes especially if they can get some publi****y from it . Mayby your troop could come sweep up there warehouse on TV to pay them for it or something . Just think out of the box. Oh by the way I don't think there the best trailer and if I were spending my money at full price I would perhaps consider another brand but there not all that bad and lots of dealers should you have trouble somewhere and need parts etc and most likely would serve your purpose.
Good Luck

Thanks for the advice. I have Pace American and Wells Cargo on my list, although I doubt my son's scout troop will be able to raise enough money for a new one. (BSA policy forbids troops from asking for donations, although we can ask for their best price.) I'm scouring the countryside for good deals on both new and used trailers, so we'll see. My first job is to educate the troop committee on the differences between trailer brands invisible to the untrained eye so that they understand why the cheapest trailer may be a mistake. I also need to make recommendations as to length, width, load carrying capacity, number of axles, brakes, compatibility with multiple tow vehicles, etc. (I have a memo in progress which relies heavily on Smokey's explanation of tow capacity to explain why one should never tow a 4,000# loaded trailer with a Jeep Liberty even though Chrysler says it can tow 4,500#.)
I am particularly interested in specific experiences people have had with Carson, Mighty Mover and AZ Tex enclosed cargo trailers, as those brands are built locally and are relatively common in my area. I noticed at the last district scouting event that those three brands made up about 80% of the troop trailers that were there.
Any other trailer mfrs in Southern California that I should consider? Besides Pace American and Wells Cargo, which of the other "major brands" should be on my list? Which should I avoid?
Thanks.
