I need some options on getting my sons 96 4x4 up to NY from Fla.
Thought about pulling the rear axles or disconecting the d shaft and hooking it on back of my 03 without a trailer. Should add both are diesel extended cab 4x4's His won't fit in my enclosed trailer sooooo.....

His has 401,000 + miles on it, mine has 45,000 I'd rather drive mine down and back but don't really want to pull a trailer both ways. Even if I found a trailer there to bring it back on.
Are there any known issues with his truck? If not, I'd be fine driving it back. Once you consider the cost of fuel down there and back, along with your time, that plane ticket gets a lot more attractive.

Hey your sons truck is his truck. But I do notice a smile everyonce in awhile when my oldman drives mine.. I would fly and drive unless there is something wrong with it.. It may not be as nice as your but its still a truck.

tow the rental up and just drive bak and its only half the miles on the rental since you tow it up

Where do I find a hauler ? I'm not against having it shipped. He's at Eglin AFB in Fla. Not a real rush at this time have a litle over a month before He goes over.

Mapping program shows 1300 miles each way, mostly interstate. Assuming you get 15 mpg on the way down and 10 mpg towing on the way back, you will burn 87 gallons down and 130 back, for a total of 217 gallons. At $3/gallon your fuel costs are ~$650.
Flying down will cut this about in half, so you can pay $325 or so for a ticket and break even on fuel, plus save 2+ days of driving.
Better yet, tell your son to drive it up himself and you'll pay for the diesel and the ticket home. Same cost to you and you save 4+ days driving.
The first time I deployed I drove mine from TX to PA and then had to go back to get it when I got back. My second deployment I rented a storage unit. I could have used the long term storage on base but didn't like the idea of my truck sitting by the water for the length of deployment and I ended up putting it in a storage unit until I got back. I'm on my third deployment. This time it's sitting back in PA since as I will only have 20 days back in the states until I'm out of the service (counting every day!) :-D.
Storage unit for 12 months at $75(military discount) $900
Long term parking- Free
Driving back to NY- Days of driving- Fuel - lodging- total ???
I'd leave it in FL if I were him. If he's going back to that base. Life is just soo much simplier when you get back if you can just go to your vehicle and go. I wish I would have done that on my first deployment. I spent two weeks in TX before I could fly back to PA to pick up my truck.
i looked into having my truck shipped. seems like about $800. get on ebay and do a search for trucks and there should be some links to shipping companies that you could compare prices. overall, sounds like its a matter of what your time is worth compared to price of flying or having it shipped.

Long term storage on base is his best bet (don't forget to disconnect the batteries.) It's usually free (deployment) and he'll have it there when he returns.
Otherwise, fly down and drive it back.

I think we found a solution, Going to Kentucky, then Fla 25 miles from his base and picking up a 30ft open car hauler to deliver 40 miles from home. And he's paying for all the fuel for delivery Sometime we get lucky
