I am putting firestone ride rite air shocks on the rear of my 97 PS. I am pulling a 34ft fifth wheel around 12,500lbs loaded. My regular shocks have about had it. Would it be a waste of money to put both on the rear of my truck? Thanks

What do you mean by "both"? Air shocks with bags?

Hey Steve F I made a mistake in typing my question and your question make me realize what I did. I meant firestone air bags. Now my question is: If I put on firestone ride right air bags do I need to upgrade the regular shocks on the rear of my PS at the same time? Thanks for catching that, now what do you think?

I have a fear of air bags that mount on the side of the frame. We have seen here too many OBS's that have had the frame crack where the bag mounts. I will try and do a search for you and see if I can find them old threads.

I highly recomend the firestone air bags!!!! If your stock shocks are more than a couple years old/30k miles, YES they need to be changed also. I recomend the bilstien shocks. the bilstiens are self adjusting vs the other good towing shock (rancho 9000) which you must adjust for empty vs towing.
With the new bilstiens truck rides nicer, (much better vs stock shocks) and with the air bags I now can adjust level of truck along with being able to customize the ride to my liking.

Ok with that said, no do not use both and to be honest I would stay away from air shocks, way to much pressure on the mounting bolts and that pressure dose NOT belong on shock studs... Sit back and think about it, would want all that load sitting on 2 bolts to the frame?
Easy and simple, if you need a boost in loading (to make you level), bags are the way to go. I had bags on my 99 F-350 and I "never" used more then 70lbs loaded. Here is a trick I did, if I left 20lbs (always best to keep some air in them) in the bags unloaded then when I put my 1,300lb hitch weight 5er on, that would set me at about 60lbs at the bags and sitting nice and level. My point? Well never had to take out or add air, BUT I did have an on board compressor for the bags that was also setup to fill tires if needed.
Go bags, forget air shocks.
Now with all that said, lol if I misunderstood and you are just asking should you add new shocks. That is up to you. Me? I didn't with my 99 and I think I had around 30,000 miles on it at the time of bag install and sold the truck at around 85,000 miles with the same shocks, I never felt a reason to replace them even at that mileage.
