Online Trailer Tire Source

Running ST235/80R-16E's and it's getting harder to find online sources.

I haven’t decided yet if it’s good or bad to stay with Made in China tires. I have seen tread separation in all ST’s and am leaning toward road conditions/bruising/speed as more of a culprit than inferior manufacturing claims by some.

It seems that most if not all RV’s are coming NEW with these 80 series tires and a majority of those are 'made in China'. A seemingly greater number of failures could occur by the greater volume in use.

Entertained the thought of going to ST235/85R-16E's but, extra height will be a problem with sidewall roll in turning and not a lot of online sources for these either.

I see some people are just fed up with ST performance/availability and are going to LT’s. That route presents another problem in that 10-ply ST’s max out at 3,520 lbs. and 10-ply LT’s max out at 2,680 lbs. I need that extra 840 x 6 = 5,040 lbs capacity.

I did see that Michelin’s XP-rib 10-plys run at 3,020 but, that’s still losing 2,000 lbs capacity and some say LT’s won’t stand up to the trailer shock/road conditions.

Going to a G in LT's would require new wheels to accept 110psi.

So, what are some suggestions?

If Michelin XPS Rib LT235/85R16E is not enough tire for your trailer, then graduate to Goodyear G614RST in size LT235/85R16G with max weight capacity of 3,750 @110 PSI. Yes, you'll need new wheels if you plan to pump up the tires to more than 80 PSI.

http://www.goodyear.com/rv/products/g614rst.html

You'll probably find those only at Goodyear "big truck" tire dealers. Not available at Discount Tire or TireRack.com or other on-line "car and light truck" tire dealers. However, TireRack does have a couple of Goodyear big-truck tires, so maybe contact them and see it they can special-order some G614RSTs for you.

To find Goodyear BigTruck tire dedalers near you, click on this:

Re: Online Trailer Tire Source

Thanks for the info Smoke. I have been looking into the 14-ply but so far not very cost effective in that several sets of existing tires are cheaper than conversion costs for 7 new wheels plus the tread. Although it's hard to place value on peace of mind.

Also, these 80 series are not failing on a regular basis at 1 in 6 for 10 to 12,000 miles. But, that's 1 in a set. Will accumlative tire impact take it's toll with others soon to show failure? Maybe....maybe not.

Searching for suppliers can be somewhat difficult as results are cluttered with RV manufacturing specs and info.

What category are trailer tires under? They don't
list them seperately.

They only go up to a "D" rating with the
15" wheel.

Re: Online Trailer Tire Source

I was looking at the 80 series 16" for a new source. The only 15" 10-ply E I've ever come across is a Carlisle but, I hate getting only 9/32" tread though. Here is my list of .coms so far for various truck and trailer tires.

tirewholesalers.com

roadwaywholesaletire.com

Re: Online Trailer Tire Source

Hey Hook'em - I don't think you will have any problems going with a quality 235/85r16E on your rig. Heck - that's the most popular tire out there for trucks. As far as tire roll, you will have 80 PSI in a n E-rated tire and it will track great.

I have BFG Commercial T/As on my 14K flatbed goosneck and it is always maxed out with hay. These tires have been great - and I have made some tight loaded turns with them.

Discount tire carries them as well - where I've bought about 5-6 sets of tires for different rigs this year (Pflugerville..)

The Michelin, of course, is likely a better choice.

I put Goodyear Wrangler HT on the 4h slant with LQ (12k lbs), as that is what was coming on all the high dollar rigs this year - so I would go with those choices (performance vs. cost).

I agree, I think that the tires from the factory are often subpar and right at the tire weight limit - especially how some of these rigs are loaded.

Let us know what you choose.

Re: Online Trailer Tire Source

I'm running a 28'GN Lowboy w/3 7k axles. With 3 fully loaded axles there is considerably more sidewall roll than with only 2 axles. Empty, front and rear tires just slide with a pivot on the centers and that's fine. But, with increased sidwall roll, punctures/flats likelyhood will also increase.

And with the Michelin xprib or other LT's they are under axle capacity by 1000 lbs or more.

Cost effectiveness says stay with the current set. Besides, only 1 has separated in 12k miles. Could have very well been road hazard instead of faulty construction.
