Overboost While Towing Uphill

This happened on two occassions while towing my 14K 5er up a long steep hill. I was in tow/haul mode, tranny downshifted a couple times, I'm at full throttle, full load when suddenly my boost guage pegged (40 PSI) and I hear a fluttering noise (probably wastegate). I immediately got out of the throttle and continued up the hill, boost returned to normal level but check engine light came on. Truck ran normal the rest of the day but I didn't encounter any other steep hills. I checked DTC's later and the following codes were set:
1st occassion:
P0238 High boost input
P0299 Turo underboost
P0478 Ex. pres. ctrl. valve high input
I cleared codes and everything seemed normal.
2nd occassion (3 months later):
P0299 Turbo underboost
P0500 Vehicle speed sensor error (VSS)
Again I cleared the codes and everything seemed normal. I later took the truck to a Ford dealer and they could not duplicate the problem or find anything wrong. Has anybody run into these conditions or have any ideas? I figured wastegate or turbo possibly carboned up and sticking, but why only when towing. Dealer said to keep an eye on it, that dosen't give me a warm fuzzy feeling. It only happened twice but I don't want to stretch any head bolts or blow head gaskets.

The fluttering noise is probably turbo surge not the wastegate. You cannot hear exhaust gasses going through the wastegate.

Your truck does not have a wastegate if it's the one in your sig, it uses the VGT to control boost. I would hate to speculate what the fluttering noise is since it's kinda hard to imagine, but it sounds like you dodged a bullet if you didn't blow the head gaskets. Mine has never gone past 28 psi on a downshift so to me it dosen't seem normal.

Keep a close eye on your coolant level and temp gauge when towing.

My 05 did the same thing (boost gauge shot up to 35-40 lbs.) but my temp gauge jumped up to hot also and it would run fine until the next time I would pull a long grade then it would do it again. I ended up getting a new turbo, headgaskets with ARP studs, and an EGR cooler.

No more problems since!!!

Thanks guys for the replies.

fireguywtc: yeah it is the truck in my sig and yeah I had a brain fart regarding the wastegate, I must have been dreaming about my old 7.3L (wishful thinking I guess). Anyway, no leaks or puking and everything is good, so maybe I was lucky, or at least until I have to pull another steep hill.

GAZ4X4: My water and tranny temps were both normal and EGT was 1200F when this happened. I thought the dealer would probably tell me I need a turbo but they told me everything checked normal. The only components that come into play here is the VGT control valve, the turbo itsself or the PCM. One of those is preventing the turbo vanes from opening under full load, full RPM's causing an overboost condition. Maybe I'll have to hook up the 5er and take it back to the Ford dealer and try to duplicate the problem.

FMan..curious..your 2nd visit to dealer..did you give them the DTCs you erased? IIRC..Deleting DTCs dosen't fix a real problem other than turning light off.

Yes, no waste gate so fluttering noise (excess boost being dumped thru intake) is considered normal when making boost & letting off go pedal real fast. Otherwise as you suspected..not normal. Good you took in for a check up.

btw..You might wanna check your degas tank more often?

I only took the truck to the dealer once after the problem happened the second time and yes I gave the dealer a detailed writen description with the DTC's. I realize clearing the codes dosen't cure the problem, I just wanted to reset the check engine light. I check all fluid levels including the degas tank regularly. I was saying in my previous post that maybe I should take it back to the dealer with the 5er hooked up and try to diagnose it again, but I haven't done it yet. I would really like to get this resolved before we head back to AZ. in Nov. The last thing I want to do is gernade my engine and be stuck sitting along the interstate someplace.
